Point tally for the first round (Having One's Ashes Hauled):
The clear winner for this round was
druidevo, who submitted option 6 (servicing the ship on shore leave) and got 7 votes.
Next was
saffronhare, whose Etruscans in option 7 attracted 4 votes.
kittenpants comes in third, with option 1 about double-parking your donkey, which got 3 votes.
Also garnering votes were
lexpendragon (2 votes for option 3, cremation practices among the Northern Europeans) and
matchgirl42 (1 vote for option 8, Sabbath servants).
Also,
adammaker's entry about voiding your poisons (#5) got a vote, but that was from
adammaker himself, who didn't read the rules and will have to be taken out back and flogged. No points for him.
Interestingly enough, there was no right answer for this round. Both
adammaker's and
matchgirl42's entries came with references about the true origin of the phrase, even though they were entirely different. Etymology of slang is notoriously hard to pin down, especially when we're talking about phrases that are older than say, last year. Anyway, good answers everybody! Will post a new round soon, possibly with a picture.
