I just got past the bit in Cryptonomicon where Randy talks about the sort of Business Plans that Avi drafts... I need to send that to
kittenpants and
saffronhare for Nine Fires Press' reference. It includes valuation schemes like living in the Gobi desert, where real estate is so cheap that they will pay you to occupy the space, and spreadsheet adjustments for devastating asteroid strike and other equally likely business occurences. This remains one of the best novels I have ever read.
Also, I am starting to record health data in a separate journal. I am having some recurring issues that I think are related to my meds (Synthroid) and I'd like to have some data available for when I next see a doctor, who will ask me the sort of questions that doctors ask and patients respond to with blank stares. I just got my new health insurance card in the mail yesterday, so I am predicting some doctor visits in the near future. This causes me some anxiety, but as I outlined yesterday for
kittenpants, there's a hierarchy of medical anxiety that works in my life. In terms of anxiety produced, it goes something like this:
percieved minor medical issues < going to the doctor < percieved serious medical issues < thinking I'm going to die or give birth
I need more data to determine which category (minor or serious) the current issues belong in, so that I can make the doctor decision accordingly.
In other news,
chronarchy has volunteered his services as intermittent pretend boyfriend. How fun is that? There's a danger here, though, which is this: if he meets my mom, she may adopt him on the spot. He's so, you know, nice, wholesome, well-educated and clean-cut. She's been waiting a long time for me to date a boy like that.
Also,
triadruid made me a new icon. Is it not nifty?
