As it turns out, I live in a cultural void when it comes to movies. I had the experience of not being allowed to watch live-action film throughout most of my pre-majority years, and I've never really caught up. There is a ridiculous number of films that by all rights, I ought to have seen, which I actually haven't, and for whatever reason, if I should chance to go into a video rental establishment, I immediately forget what they all are.

To remedy this, I'd like to start a to-watch list of films I'd like to remember to rent, borrow, or see on the big screen when they come out. I know I'm not going to make 50 new movies this year like [livejournal.com profile] chainwoman, but I'm going to try for 20. I've seen six already, those being 28 Days Later, Hellboy, Casablanca, The Last Temptation of Christ, Boondock Saints and Chicago. It probably says something about my taste in film that I enjoyed the first five just about equally (which was a lot), and didn't care much at all for the last.

Anyway, here's the list. If you could be so kind as to recommend a film to add to the list, I'd be grateful. (I tend to like the sort of films with monsters, superheroes, pirates and explosions better than the sort of films with none of those elements, but I'm pretty flexible on that.)

In Theatres:
- Van Helsing
- Troy
- I, Robot
- Shrek 2
- Alien v. Predator
- Neverland
- Spiderman 2
- Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

On the Box (can you believe I haven't seen these already?)
- The Usual Suspects
- Reservoir Dogs
- Silence of the Lambs
- Waking Life
- Requiem for a Dream
- Adaptation
- Lost in Translation
- Donnie Darko
- The Professional
- Cutthroat Island
- Heat
- Unbreakable
- Big Trouble in Little China (I've seen half of it, but could stand to see the whole thing)
- American History X
- Memento (another entry from the "rented but didn't watch" list)

More will be added here as they occur to me.

I didn't see any movies last year in the theater. I won't see any movies this year in a theater, so I can't add anything to you list. Sorry. :-)

Pulp Fiction I saw. Kill Bill should probably go on the list, just because. But I'm probably not going to rent 1 while 2 is still in the theaters, so I'm going to wait until they're both rentable and watch them together. Or something.

I've heard people talk mad shit about Waking Life, but I really liked it. It has a lot to say, and Linklater is a really creative filmmaker if not a brilliant one. At the very least, I need a boat that's also a car.

I can't remember the name of it... It generated a huge buzz when it came out two or three years ago, it was about fairies. These little girls claimed to have seen them and a scientist/photographer came to their town to investigate and ended up getting caught up in it... Was it "a fairy story?" It might have been. Whatever the title, see it, it was beautiful.

Waking Life has been on the list for a while. It's one of those things that I'm going to have to watch by myself though, since I can never convince anyone to rent it and watch it with me.

I saw the other one you're talking about - I think it was 'A Fairy Story', but it seems like it was out a lot longer ago than that... I seem to remember seeing it in my first or second year of college (I know this because I was dating a guy at the time who worked at a movie theater, which was the only reason I went to the theater I remember seeing it in), so that would have been like... 1996 or 1997. Yeesh.

Yeah. 1997 (http://imdb.com/title/tt0119095/). I repeat, yeesh.

Lol. At least you're not too old to remember it.

Another good movie is Big Trouble in Little China. That's good stuff. I just gave it a review a month or so ago and it really holds up.

My aunt also just got me into Firefly, which is on DVD now but only ran 14 or so episodes vefore Fox canceled it. It was a Joss Whedon space western show, and it isn't half bad. You can see that if they had let it run it's course it could have gotten really good.

Actually I've only seen one of the films on your rental list. Anyhow, my rental suggestion for you would be "Cutthroat Island."

For ages while it was out in the theatre we talked about seeing "Lost in Translation" now - it niether has explosions or pirates...infact a pretty mellow flick by all acounts...but Bill Murry in a way he's never been on film....I own it now so you are welcome to it...

As far as brain candy exploding adventure flicks.... "XXX" was pretty nifty....

Have you seen Lawrence of Arabia?

I was not that impressed with XXX, but that's just me...I liked the

Anyway, not sure but I don't think you've seen many of these: Memento, Chinatown, L.A. Confidential, American History X, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, Tombstone, Sling Blade, Good Will Hunting, Heat, Unbreakable.

Ones that are on my list but cannot personally vouch for would be things like Snatch, Rain Man, and Goodfellas. And what did you tell me about Donnie Darko?

Don't worry; my 'to see' list is as long as yours, it's just different...

Sorry, aborted thought there

Couldn't think of the one 'like XXX, but good' that I wanted.

Others I think might be good: The Professional and Se7en.

Yeah... Donnie Darko. I keep meaning to see that. And Unbreakable. I've rented that one like three times, but never watched it.

I've seen about half of the others on your list, but you've got some good ones on there I haven't seen... Time to update the big list. :)

Do you have broadband? I've got bunches of movies on my computer I could share with you.

Thanks!

I do have broadband. Not sure I have the decoding or burning abilities anymore though. Got anything particularly interesting? (I've got nothing to trade, but if you're willing to share, that would be really cool).

Oh... no, sorry, I only collect boring crap. Oh well.

.

But seriously - yeah, I have more than 100 gigabytes of film on my computer (most movies are either 700 MB or 1.4 GB). Do you run Microsoft Messenger? That's the only IM client I have that I can do direct transfers with.

Email me at 'videogeek@greek2me.com' and we can figure something out.

Hey, I tried to IM you last night, to offer a movie or two (I had in mind Lost In Translation and Brazil) but you either weren't around, or you don't respond to random people you don't know.

So you know, my AIM ID is: snorkelzzz

Ah ha. Yes, sorry - I had a lot of random asshole activity last night, and wasn't into talking to anybody else. I didn't know that was you... sorry bout that.

I'd love to get Lost in Translation from you - I think I have Brazil already.

I have a lot of them that I haven't managed to see for one reason or another. I haven't been nearly so organized as to make a list though. I just note when people say, "you haven't seen THAT?"
We'll just have to institute movie nights so that we can all work through our backlog.

From: [identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com
I'm in favor of movie night. It helps my attention span to be in a room with other people interested in the film. I just about can't watch movies by myself - I tend to wander off and do other things.

From: [identity profile] capriciouslass.livejournal.com
I have that wandering problem too. When I'm working around the house, I tend to put a movie that I like in for background noise. For some reason I get more done that way.

so, Troy?

I was planning to go to see Troy after the zoo concert on Saturday. Since I see it on your list there, would you and a number of other people like to make an event of it? Also, did the decision ever get made as to whether there would be flaunt?

I've been too busy to plan flaunt. Movie sounds good though. I'm pretty sure we'll be at the zoo thing.

There could still be a flaunt, but someone other than me needs to organize it.

well, since we've been rather boisterous lately with the season, perhaps a more laid-back post-movie, post-concert celebration would be in order? I was thinking just being laid back and chatting or some such.

If you like "Cutthroat Island", I'd also recommend:

"Yellowbeard" with half the cast of Monty Python, Madeline Kahn, Cheech and Chong, and Marty Feldman (who died during the filming; try to spot the point in the movie where...[grin]), and;

"Down Periscope" with Kelsey Grammer and Lauren Holly.
