As it turns out, I live in a cultural void when it comes to movies. I had the experience of not being allowed to watch live-action film throughout most of my pre-majority years, and I've never really caught up. There is a ridiculous number of films that by all rights, I ought to have seen, which I actually haven't, and for whatever reason, if I should chance to go into a video rental establishment, I immediately forget what they all are.

To remedy this, I'd like to start a to-watch list of films I'd like to remember to rent, borrow, or see on the big screen when they come out. I know I'm not going to make 50 new movies this year like [livejournal.com profile] chainwoman, but I'm going to try for 20. I've seen six already, those being 28 Days Later, Hellboy, Casablanca, The Last Temptation of Christ, Boondock Saints and Chicago. It probably says something about my taste in film that I enjoyed the first five just about equally (which was a lot), and didn't care much at all for the last.

Anyway, here's the list. If you could be so kind as to recommend a film to add to the list, I'd be grateful. (I tend to like the sort of films with monsters, superheroes, pirates and explosions better than the sort of films with none of those elements, but I'm pretty flexible on that.)

In Theatres:
- Van Helsing
- Troy
- I, Robot
- Shrek 2
- Alien v. Predator
- Neverland
- Spiderman 2
- Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

On the Box (can you believe I haven't seen these already?)
- The Usual Suspects
- Reservoir Dogs
- Silence of the Lambs
- Waking Life
- Requiem for a Dream
- Adaptation
- Lost in Translation
- Donnie Darko
- The Professional
- Cutthroat Island
- Heat
- Unbreakable
- Big Trouble in Little China (I've seen half of it, but could stand to see the whole thing)
- American History X
- Memento (another entry from the "rented but didn't watch" list)

More will be added here as they occur to me.

I was not that impressed with XXX, but that's just me...I liked the

Anyway, not sure but I don't think you've seen many of these: Memento, Chinatown, L.A. Confidential, American History X, Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, Tombstone, Sling Blade, Good Will Hunting, Heat, Unbreakable.

Ones that are on my list but cannot personally vouch for would be things like Snatch, Rain Man, and Goodfellas. And what did you tell me about Donnie Darko?

Don't worry; my 'to see' list is as long as yours, it's just different...

Sorry, aborted thought there

Couldn't think of the one 'like XXX, but good' that I wanted.

Others I think might be good: The Professional and Se7en.

Yeah... Donnie Darko. I keep meaning to see that. And Unbreakable. I've rented that one like three times, but never watched it.

I've seen about half of the others on your list, but you've got some good ones on there I haven't seen... Time to update the big list. :)
