The way it was supposed to happen: Friday, at noon, MS is supposed to come by and pick up
kittenpants. They're going to run some errands, and then head out to St. Louis, where on Saturday, we were going to attend an event being held by St. Louis Mysteries. They were going early to set up, and also to deliver a newfie puppy to its new people, who were coincidentally in St. Louis. The puppy had been rescued from the pound, where it was on a 10-day road to being put down -- it had been taken from the pound previously, and bitten the person, who had then returned it to the pound. Apparently, this is always a death sentence for a dog, nevermind the fact that this is a 4 month old puppy. Go figure. So MS is saving this dog by taking it to St. Louis.
The plan from there is that
triadruid and I will get off work Friday at 5:30, and then drive to St. Louis and meet
kittenpants and MS. We would then stay overnight with one of the folk organizing this thing, get up in the morning, spend the day attending and leading workshops, do a big ritual in the evening, and then drive home Saturday night.
About noon, MS and the puppy did arrive at EHQ. MS was having massive abdominal pain, and threw up on the driveway. She crawled into the house, had more doom, and then got
kittenpants to call her an ambulance and take her to the hospital. There was a general feeling of appendicitis in the air.
The EMTs came. The puppy was deposited in the garage at EHQ, and MS and
kittenpants went to the hospital. Sometime later, there was a flurry of phone calls, trying to keep me and
triadruid up to speed. Should we still go to the event without her? Could we teach the workshops she was giving? Was the weather going to just get shittier, preventing us from going at all? If we went, did we have to take the dog? If we didn't, who would take care of the dog?
It shakes out that the weather is so bad that it doesn't seem worth it to go. We call and cancel. MS is still in the ER, being subjected to all sorts of poking, prodding, bleeding, and scanning. Her partner drives up to the hospital from Harrisonville. All is full of doom.
Eventually,
triadruid and I get off of work (a bit early, due to icy doom), and wind our way down to the hospital. By this time, they have determined that MS had a large cyst, which ruptured, and not appendicitis at all. Everyone feels better. We leave her there in the ER, on the good drugs, and go to dinner. We come home, and there is this puppy in the garage. Fractal the Chaos Hound is doing his doggie best to keep the puppy entertained, but he is a 6 year old dog and he gives us this look like, "Why do you do this to me?". We try to call Wayside Waifs to pick up the puppy, but they are closed.
Sometime that evening, we get a call from the St. Louis Mystery people. They have cancelled the event. Not only can we not come, the people coming from Chicago are iced in and can't fly out, and the people coming in from Diana's Grove in southern MO are iced in as well. Ten of the (roughly) 16 presenters are out of the running. They're not sure they will have power at the center where the event is being held. Maybe another time, they say.
Saturday, MS got to leave the hospital and go home with some heavy antibiotics. Sunday, Gaia services were cancelled. Wayside Waifs was open, though, so we were able to take the puppy to them, and they will make new arrangements to get it to its new people (we thought about keeping it for about ten minutes, until it took a dump in the middle of the kitchen floor).
They're trying to reschedule the event to some time in March. We may still be able to go. We hate to not go at this point, since we spent a fair amount of time developing this workshop (which is on Prayer Beads for Pagans), but are unsure now if we can. They are supposed to get back to us with a firm date sometime soon.
