triadruid has graciously agreed to make me a superhero icon. (Or at least has intimated that he might do such a thing, and I think I can talk him into actually doing it.)
His question, though, was what extant comic-book superhero would be an accurate avatar for me? Anybody got an opinion on that? Supervillains are also acceptable. :)
I asked the question primarily because the 'action' in Watchmen takes place when the main characters are all sort of past their prime and out of the business. Nite Owl is a character who it's pretty easy to be like and respect, but he (like most of the Watchmen crew) is also fairly pathetic. The story is absolutely heart-breaking -- these are people who were once sort of champions of right and justice, beloved by the people and in the middle of things, who are now middle-aged, outmoded, and unwanted by the people they protected. They're inspired by a previous Golden Age, but their time is more like a garbage age. It's a little like the superhero version of the Island of Misfit Toys. There's a particularly wrenching scene with Nite Owl and the Silk Spectre -- the intimation is that Dreiburg (the Nite Owl) is impotent as his normal everyday self, and has to put on the suit and bust bad guys in order to get it up. They're all so damaged, you have to love them.
Re: I am obviously going to lose geek cred on this.
