We're watching Firefly, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] orcjohn. At some point in the series, the Serenity is full of cows. It is a spaceship. Full of cows. No one here seems to grasp how intrinsically funny this is.

Not like strapped-in cows, either. Just cows, milling about in the hold. They have horns. The comic potential is limitless.

I really liked the idea

of horses and cows in space. After all, unlike machinery, they don't need spare parts, they're easy to maintain, and, best of all, they reproduce themselves!

Given the idea that the outer worlds are basically being terraformed and then people dropped on them, it makes a whole lot of sense to me that they'd use animals.

I didn't think it was a bad idea to have cows in space. I just think it's a bad idea not to secure them in some fashion. I mean, I grasp that the Serenity has some sort of artificial gravity, but if that were to go, and all those cows went floating loose, bumping into things, what a mess that would be!

Now, I do think it's a bad idea to have chopsticks in space. But that's a totally different story.
