There's something about sleeping nine or ten hours, and then waking up to find that a large check has made its way into one's bank account to make one feel empowered to make positive change.

So. Anybody want to help tear down and rebuild a wooden fence sometime in the next month or so?

This is the plan: Currently, EHQ has a lovely but somewhat damaged board fence around two of the four sides of its backyard. This fence is made up of six-inch boards mounted flush to each other on railings made out of 2x4s. We propose to take the boards off the current fence, reset them with four-inch gaps between them, build a rail and post system on the unfenced bits of the yard, and put up the spare boards on the other side. This should allow us to fence the yard without buying 300 feet of fence-staves, which are expensive.

This should keep the 7 1/2" wide dog on his side of the fence, while still admitting squirrels, rabbits, and other things that the dog likes to chase and sometimes catch and eat. It should also be a way to put up a dog-containing fence at minimal cost. It will also require a gate, but we have yet to figure out how to work that, so suggestions are welcome.

I don't know - I mean, I know you lot tear things down, but we need it to remain in a useable fashion when it comes down. [livejournal.com profile] zylch was particularly disappointed about this.

Hmm. That does complicate things. We might have to exercise Moderation in that. We'll have to get back to you.

Darn! Needing to keep it useable does take all of the fun out of it!

I find myself needing to do the dog pen/fence thing also. Spastic puppy needs a more permanent enclosure, but my yard would be a nightmare to fence all the way around. I think she's going to get a more moderately sized pen down closer to the creek by the time we're done.

The offer of our unused pen still stands.

Terribly dissapointed, but not unwilling to help anyway. Besides, my Bag O' Electronic Destruction is still over there.

I'll measue the dogs head today, if possible it would probably be better in the reuse department if you removed every other board (not to mention time saving). Gates are no big deal. Another option would be to buy sectional pieces a few at a time to spread the cost out over time. Oh, and if you hadn't figured out I'll be there tool...uh tools in hand.

Ooh, calipers. What that does to me!

I measured the dog to the best of my ability the other day. If you would like to re-measure the dog, for scientific accuracy, that would be cool. We thought he was a bit over 7" wide at his widest point, but that if he wanted to, he could probably fit through a 6" gap. (Taking off every other board was the first plan, of course. We're lazy.)

Thanks for your assistance -- I'm always pleased to have gentlemen put their tools at my disposal.

How stupid of me, of course you would have thought of that.

Doesn't Fractal have a tendency to bust through those boards?

Gates are more complex, but it is basically a big cabinet door. The biggest challenge is getting two thick parrallel 4X4s into the grouns deep enough and solidly enough that they won't tilt when the gate is hung.

He can chew through them, but it takes a while.
I figure the dog *can* get out of anything -- the fence is more for the purposes of reminding him where his territory ends and placating the Animal Control people. My goal is not to keep him from being able to escape, since that's impossible. The new goal is to make it so that he doesn't want to escape very often.

I thought about electric fence wire for baron... cheap, and when electrified, keeps him from bashing into it.

I suspect that it would have to be electrified enough to so permanent damage in order to keep Fractal away from it, which is completely not worth it to me. Anything less, though, he'd just push through. That's why we're not using invisible fencing. He'd just ignore it and go on his merry way.

Really, the dog requires a Level 5 Containment Field to *keep* him anywhere. If he got bored enough (or entranced enough), he could probably work his way through wrought iron, it would just take him longer. He's...very dense.

As K says, the plan is to make it not worth his while to want to escape very often. There are several factors in line for this goal state...

I'm not all that useful in demolitions and constructions, oddly enough. I am, however, very good at clearing debris, carrying lemonade, volunteering my husband for service and stuff like that.
