Today's experiment:
What burns when you touch it to an easy-light charcoal incense burner briquette?

Results:

Lights on fire:
- A match

Doesn't light on fire:
- Raffia
- Tissue paper (2-ply)
- Tissue paper (1-ply)
- Newsprint
- A q-tip
- Vodka (80 proof)
- Whisky (86 proof)
- Rubbing alcohol (at this point, we gave up on the alcohol line of pursuit)
- [livejournal.com profile] triadruid's beard

Special bonus finding: Winter sucks, snow sucks, and I am tired of being cold.

Did you use 90% rubbing alcohol or 70%?

Nah, 70%. Burns like anything when touched to flame, but won't start from a (single) glowing coal, interestingly.

Having just had my first snows in six years, I respectfully disagree! I have missed winter SO much!

Still, hope it warms up for you where you are!

Conclusion

So the answer to the question is: a match, and only a match, burns when touched to an easy-light charcoal incense burner briquette.

Though incense is conspicuously absent from the list.

Come to think of it, so are fingers.

So was this an experiment an attempt to stay warm?

Incense was tried later, and the result was much the same: smolders/glows like incense should, but there's no initial flare of flame on the tip.

It was an attempt to figure out visually non-obvious way to light a fire.
[livejournal.com profile] triadruid mentions the incense results already, and we have no results for fingers, as [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants strongly discouraged us from picking up live coals of any sort. Once again, science is thwarted by good sense.

Can relate very stronly to the bonus find. It helps that my apartment is a basement one. And no room for 2 roomies with whom to cuddle. (I can cuddle with Racer, yeah, but it's not the same ...)

:(
In the winter, the Den of Iniquity loses much of its iniquitous character, and becomes the Frozen Basement of DOOM!™

But yeah, at least I sometimes have someone to sleep with. There's not really much of Racer to cuddle with -- maybe you could trade him in for a large friendly dog. Would they let you keep a Newfoundland in your apartment?

Lovely offer, but A) Couldn't and wouldn't trade Widdle Racer for the world, and B)Waaaay not enough room in my apt. for a Newfoundland, though I'm sure he/she/it is adorable.

HHHMmmmmm and all this time I thought triadruid was a phoenix In fact he is flame retardant

In the house as it is I am still asking where did the redheaded one store this and that etc. etc. etc. Then of course some of that moves on it's own or the ghosties move it

AAAAAHHHhhhh spring even with the allergies I long for the gentle warmtn and window open nights
