This is a no shit, real conversation I just had.

Coworker: Is a ferret a cat or a dog?
Me: Neither. A ferret is a ferret.
Coworker: But is it more like a cat, or more like a dog?
Me: It's not like a cat or a dog. It's like a ferret. They're probably rodents, or some other such thing which is neither a cat nor a dog.
Coworker: Who the hell cares about ferrets anyway?
Me: Um....ferret owners?

Oooh, it's a baby wolverine!

Mustelidae

The Mustelidae is a family of carnivorous mammals, that are regarded by some as rather primitive. Many kinds of mustelids are maligned by humans. However, the Mustelidae is among the most successful, beautiful, diverse and interesting families in order Carnivora. Mustelids range from the Least weasel, not much larger than a mouse, which can live in the high Arctic; to the wolverine, a 50-pound animal that can dispatch reindeer, crush bones as thick as the femur of a moose to get at the marrow, and has been known to drive bears from kills; to the ratel, who has a unique symbiosis with a bird called the honey guide bird; to the tropical, largely fruit-eating tayra; to the aquatic otters. Other mustelids include mink, badgers, weasels, polecats, and martens.

There you are then. I knew one of you clever lot would know what family ferrets belonged to. Thanks :)

Thank you. A bit friendlier than a baby wolverine but this is a bit better answer than the others...

The answer is Cat.

Science aside, if you play with one, clean up the sh-t from one, piss one off, or take one to the vet, they are more like cats than any other animal. They do not have rodent teeth, they actually have small dog-like teeth. But they eat cat food and sh-t cat sh-t. they also hiss when you drop them or piss them off. They purr and cuddle like a cat.

They are long goofy cats, with a hamster's tendency to get into trouble, and a dog's tendency to chew.

So in reality, David's answer is right. But the general answer is cat. ;-)

No, they're more like rats than cats.

The biggest argument against that is the teeth and poo. But they do have rat-like fingers.

Oddly, the ferret we had used to pounce at me much like our bunny does. I've not had a rat though, so I might be missing something.

They also have issues with Feline Leukemia, oddly enough.

Rats?

Cats eat rats, too!

But do ferrets eat cats?

Cats have been known to get along with rats. I've not heard of the same with ferrets.

Cats usually avoid ferrets if they can. One person talks about how their cat walked along the curtain rods so as to not interact with them.

I don't think they've actually eaten cats but I do think that ferrets confuse cats. Cats are used to being master of all they survey. They can't do that with ferrets. But at the same time the ferrets don't lord it over cats. Many cats just don't know how to deal with this...

It sems like you've never had ferrets? One of the oddest things about them at times is that they don't purr. I expect them to after having cats for so long. They do chuckle and they do war dance.

Giving them cat food is generally a bad idea; cat food doesn't have enough protein in it. You can actually starve them to death if you give them a vegetarian diet.

I'll go away now. You don't need me getting my buttons pushed by the large amount of mis-information about ferrets that's out there. I'll just sit here and think about honey-dipped gnomes.

I've not had that chance although it sounds like fun. Honey-dipped or otherwise. The nose is a wonderful sensory organ.

But...but... you are the person I know who is most likely to be a ferret expert. I was unable to manage much beyond "It's not a cat, or a dog". That statement, along with "They poo in corners" and "One bit me once" pretty much makes up my total ferret-knowledge. I believe that they were once used to crawl through pipes for some purpose, but I don't even know if that's true or not.

Still, I outrank everyone else in the office on this subject, which is sad.

Yes, I do know quite a bit about ferrets. The answer you needed though was the first comment. They have been used to take cables down pipes and ferrets have been used in Europe for flushing badgers and other similar creatures out of the ground.

If the ferret nipped you, then it might've thought you were playing. If on the other hand, it actually _bit_ you then it likely wasn't handled enough or had other problems. Ferrets are not low-maintenance animals. They have to be played with just about every day.

I thought it might be wise to shut up because I was arguing with all your other commentors. That seems to've settled down down.

I seem to be the expert in my office on honey-dipped gnomes. I seemed to be slowly advancing my knowledge but I'm always willing to learn more.

I'm be leaving soon, after I abort these orders and get the workflow to continue. Well, leaving but still staying in Seattle proper...

Do you tipple?
Do you ever make it to Capitol Hill?

1. I don't know, I've never read Tippling. (apologies if the joke is too obscure)

2. Yes, I do, sometimes.

Do you ever make it to the Grind at the WetSpot?

1. No, I'm familiar with the gag. And aren't you the jungle boy?!

2. I propose that you and I should meet sometime over a beer (or your beverage of choice), and plot how to get Featherynscale to Seattle.

Never heard of it. Sounds like the sort of place I'd remember.

It's on the list. Sadly, I only manage a few places on the list a year these days. I need a job where I can travel. (Or, you know, to win the lottery or something. Yeah, that would work.)

So, may I ask where on the list it is? I know it's not an easy place to get to at times.

Someone once accused me of being pushy and forward. I asked them what their point was.

I've been known to brachiate...

Beverage of choice sounds good. I'm much more available for lunch like activities than evening things. Where do you work?
Shall we plan this on her journal or let her have her journal back?

If you wanted to know more about the 'Spot, you can go here. It's one of the reasons that many of my evenings are occupied. It's nice being in a city with a Sex Positive Community Center. Dancing without worrying about how much clothes I can take and and with no worries about smoke is excellent.
