Last night, [livejournal.com profile] triadruid and I embarked on a perilous quest: to make it to the hardware store before they closed, and obtain the wood and other supplies necessary to build a pine coffin. Lest my gentle readers think that this is an easy task for ones so mighty as we, I note that on Monday night, we set out with the same goal, and failed miserably, forcing us to drive around for a ridiculous span of time looking for a hardware store open past 10 p.m., or, failing that, a liquor store open past same. We were able to acquire the liquor, but the hardware, not so much.

So we made another attempt. And lo, we did arrive at Lowe's before they shut the doors. We picked up our things, had several enlightening conversations with the staff ("You building a treehouse?" "No, we're building a coffin." "Er... oh."), spent over $100 and prepared to leave. This is when we realized that not only were our several 4x8 sheets of plywood not going to fit in the interior druidmobile, but also they were in fact possibly larger than the druidmobile altogether. So we tied them to the top of the car. There was considerable overhang, for, oh my cousins, the druidmobile is a Ford Aspire, which is only slightly larger than my boot.

The conversation ensued:
featherynscale: "This has got to be illegal"
triadruid: "What? It's not illegal not to own a truck."
featherynscale: "But it probably is illegal to drive down the highway with something larger than your car balanced on top."
triadruid: "Hrm... We'll drive reeeeealllly sloooow."

But we made it home without any loss of wood or police interference, so all is well. We'll start constructing the coffin soon. I am inordinately pleased with all of this.

I have often put really large objects on really inadequate hauling vehicles. Unless the thing looks like it is going to fall and hurt someone, it isn't illeagal. Problem is, most any time you put a 4x8 sheet of lumber on a car that is about that size, and it will LOOK dangerous.
