On the goodness of trains

Having heard that I liked trains, the universe (with the help of some of you!) has lovingly provided me with much train-based joy.

First, primitivepeople rode the very sexy High Speed One, and posted lovely pictures.

Then, greektoomey pointed me towards The Train Suite I: Viscous Oil & Persimmon Tea, which includes the lovely bit of Palimpsest I'm so in love with about the trains of heaven, and also some very nice train backing vocals.

And then! corwin00, over on his Facebook, shared this amazing paper city, with, oh yes my friends, a working paper train. I will be very disappointed in you if you don't click that, because if you don't, you will have willfully missed out on a thing of intricate and frankly fucking impressive beauty.

Trains, eh? Then you might want to add to your safari a visit to The Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad, in Boone, IA. Steam engines, a 1920s excursion train ride, and so forth.

And if you make it to Boone, you might want to visit the Ledges State Park just south of town. 'S cool.

Boone is a redneck town--saw more women walking around with black eyes there than anyplace I've ever lived or visited--but there's some cool stuff 'round there. You mentioned trains and I thought of the steam engines they use on the trains.

My uncle used to be an Asst. DA for Boone County. The way he pronounced it ("Boooooooouuwwwnnne!") backs up your assessment very nicely...

I was shopping for groceries in Boone when a little girl looked at me, tugged on her mother's purse, and loudly asked "Mommy, why does that man have a pony tail?" I chuckled and winked at the girl, all the while pitying her for having such a weird, white bread world that she hadn't seen any long-haired men.
