All this pirate stuff lately reminds me
Sep. 22nd, 2003 02:52 pm When I was a kid, I lived perilously close to Disney World, and it was a custom in our family to buy the three-season passes to Disney for all the kids for Christmas (they were apparently not prohibitively expensive then). So I logged a lot of hours at the Magic Kingdom in my formative years.
I recall at that time thinking that it must be the greatest thing in the world to work at Disney World (I think I'm about 6 when this occurs to me), and I of course have relatives that work there, and I think "Yes, that's what I'll do - one day I'm going to work at Disney World."
And I had already picked out what I wanted to do - I wanted to be a pirate on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, one of those guys that tells people how to sit in the boat, and all that sort of thing. Why? Because I had some inborn drive to piracy, stunted in the modern age (after all, most of my famous ancestors are famous because they were, in fact, pirates)? No.
Because the pirates wore (and possibly still wear - I haven't been to the park in a while) orange and purple striped knee socks as part of their costume. And if you know me now, or knew me then, you would understand that to me, there could possibly be nothing better in the world than orange and purple striped knee socks. Over the years, I made several attempts to obtain the Socks - I tried to buy some off a pirate, tried to get Disney-employeed relatives to steal me a pair, tried to convince people at various levels of Disney retail structure that this would be an ideal merchandise item, but to no avail. The Pirate Socks forever eluded me. Dammit.
I had forgotten about that until today. For the record, today I am wearing black, grey and silver striped knee socks, which are pretty freaking sweet, but still do not approach the glory of the Pirate Socks I could never have.

Hey... I could knit you purple and orange CHENILLE kneesocks. Hee hee.

Date: 2003-09-22 03:17 pm (UTC)I liked wearing latex gloves at the hospital... I used to have a collection of every sort of glove, including the elbow-length coroner's gloves.
They didn't feel as sexy though. Too thick. proof against sawed-off rib bones assumably.
