Went to the Witches' meetup last night - I had not been to anything with this group before, and was feeling iffy about going. You never know what kind of people will show up to these things, and the prospect of spending an evening in the company of a platoon of SilverRavenWolf Teen Witches (tm) is daunting even at the best of times.

I was surprised though - everybody seemed nice, stable, and well past the "look-at-me-I'm-so-wierd" age. Got good information about upcoming gatherings, saw [livejournal.com profile] kcwitch and Caroline there. Mikki gave me a fabulous crystal chunk from her expedition to Arkansas.

She also told me about RenFest auditions. I really would like to work the festival this year, but unfortunately, I think the last weekend of the festival is the same time as SPiRaL. The festival site seemed quite clear that you were to show up every weekend of the festival, especially if you were a newbie, so I think that's out. Bummer. I really need an excuse to get new garb. Course, I could always make new garb anyway. Or could, if I could sew. I should learn.

Sewing isn't hard, it is cutting the things in the right shape that sucks. You have to take a 2-d plane, and cut it to fit a 3-d object much more complex than a cube or pyramid. Anatomical Geometry is what I call it. And to compound madness on madness, this 3d object moves and requires slack in some parts, so this has to be factored in. THEN, the 3d object wants certain areas pushed in, out, or up certain ways. While the measuring and fitting around these certain areas can be quite fun, the math required will make your mind numb. THEN... they want extra fabric to drape, flow, or poof in a certain way. Rrrr....

But sewing is easy. Once you can thread a machine, the battle is half-won. Best way to start is with t-tunics and ceremonial gowns. Then work up to chemises and pants. Making garb is a progressive art... start out easy and work your way up. Some of my coolest stuff has been a stylized t-tunic made with really cool fabric and a killer trim. ;-)
