The Birthday Party (and other much ilk)

For such a crap week last week, the weekend went pretty damned well. Friday we visited our Liberal Neighbors™, who were hosting a party for the Obama campaign. We stayed just long enough to note a campaign principle (Organize!, which I think is a fine principle) and nick a yard sign. Apparently, somebody came round and fucked up the only other Obama sign in the neighborhood (on the lawn of said Liberal Neighbors™), but nobody's messed with ours yet. We also went to Blue Koi for dumplings with zylch, crookedface, and curlysquirrel. We stayed there a bit longer, because, you know, they have extremely tasty dumplings.

Saturday night we hosted a Convention of Time Travelers, to which virtually everyone came in costume, and a lot of good friends sat around in my living room discussing competing theories of the nature of time and getting sodding drunk. This sort of party is definitely one of my sorts of parties. triadruid emerged from the costume closet dressed in an old military uniform (Marines) and introduced himself as Lt. Reynolds, attached to the USS Eldridge. He earns points for saying so, practically everyone else loses points for not getting the joke. Several of the time-travelers were researchers, and spent some portion of the evening studying each other. By the time we'd been at it for a couple of hours, we took a vote and decided that the space-time continuum was already fucked, and we might as well have another beer.

rampantfox brought a game called 'Time's Up!', in which you pair off into teams and try to get your partner to guess a historical or fictional character, at first with as many words as you like, then with one word, and then by means of charade. This is, in practice, a lot funnier than it sounds. I learned that some of my friends don't know the difference between Rasputin and Rumplestiltskin, that you can evoke the memory of Woodrow Wilson by yelling "Erection Man!", and that when triadruid describes John Dillinger, the first thing he'll say is "He was the gangster with the big cock", which is enough to make me think of John Dillinger, but apparently not anybody else. Discussion of the possible locations of Rasputin's and Dillinger's penises ensued.

Somehow, everyone got home all right, except for co-celebrant kaymyth, who crashed on the couch and went home in the morning. Also, after I went to bed, other people cleaned up! It barely looked like there was a party there at all. This is nothing short of miraculous. We were richer by a few left-behind items, but I think most of them have been returned, and we just have adammaker's goggles and kaymyth's fog machine.

Con prep continues; it looks like neither triadruid nor I will be forced to go to Con and wander around naked for lack of costume. I'm putting the finishing touches on Agatha Heterodyne and Her BFG, and he's got a few Green Arrow issues to work out, but other than that, we're good. Which is good, because we're leaving in two days.

AGATHA:
- Finish painting gun and affix shiny metal parts
- Style wig
- Sew buttons and trim on camisole
- Sew elastic and trim on bloomers
GREEN ARROW:
- Paint and finish off quiver
- Make up a few more trick arrowheads
- Attach belt buckle to belt
- Paint belt
- Make domino mask
- Sew together doublet and add laces
- Dye gloves
- Make strappy bracer things
JOHN CONSTANTINE:
- Gore up angel wings
ARMY GIRL:
- Get boots from saffronhare
STEAMPUNK/MAGE GIRL:
- Pick up hat from arkhamrefugee

You're going to Dragon*Con?! I am too!! Maybe I will see you there. I've been curious about SteamPunk ever since I discovered the band Abney Park, whom I'm planning to see on Friday night. It would be really cool to meet you! I've met some of my LJ friends at the Con. I can't wait to see your costumes, if we do touch base or if you post them. I think the only "official" costume I'm doing is my Tobi cosplay (Naruto anime), but I need to put together a few outfits, especially for the concert on Friday night. Apparently there's a Steampunk meetup on Friday night in the Hilton Casablanca Bar around 9 p.m. This may in some way be relevant to the Abney Park show. I expect I'll be wearing my happy little striped-sleeve outfit on Friday to go to that thing, so if you happen to be there, I'll see you there!

I'm not sure! He will be a comic-book style Green Arrow, though, not the Smallville style. That may help. Also, I don't recall having seen *any* Green Arrows at recent cons...

Fair enough. Apparently the entrance requirements for the Smallville cast include (and may be limited to) being extremely cute, their Ollie Queen is pretty cute, too (http://images.fanpop.com/images/image_uploads/Green-Arrow--smallville-432795_1024_768.jpg). Although his outfit has a hood. I don't love that.

My sober self totally knows the difference, but apprarently my brain on a second JB & Coke (and perhaps a glass of mead by that point) only reads the first, last, and perhaps one in the middle letters of words when trying to play a fast-paced game. My brain does not understand spatial arrangments in that one name is considerably longer than the other, however...

I just saw this old Jack Kirby Green Arrow story from the 50's online and immediately thought of you and Mister triadruid.



An international convention of Green Arrow's... you just have to love the Silver Age! The full comic can be found here. My favorite has to be the wide variety of trick arrows employed by these guys - such as 'The Lava Arrow', 'The Ju-Jitsu Arrow', 'The Big Ben Arrow' and of course... 'Heli-Spotter Arrow'.

Oh, if only the story had Canadian Green Arrow in it and Greenland Green Arrow :)

Hee! I think I've seen that somewhere before... but that's probably because you've posted it before. :) In any case, wildly amusing. I have to say, though, I'm a little disappointed -- triadruid could have chosen to go as that fellow in the leopard skin, there. That would have been all right.

Somewhat related issue, will I be seeing you on Thursday? (Or at some other point during Con weekend?)

I think the guy in the leopard toga is Jungle Arrow (who sounds like a Drum n'Bass DJ now that I think of it)... might've been an easier costume to put together though, huh?

Well I hope so. I might go down on Thursday to purchase my badge (might go on Friday morning though). Either way I'll be free that evening or if you don't spot me I'll be there (except on Sunday because my DM has decided to run the game this weekend).

I expect it would be a much easier bit of drag to accomplish. The standard GA dress includes a doublet attached to a set of superheroic undies-on-the-outside, which go over tights. The boy will look quite fetching, I'm sure, but it'll be the very Devil if/when he has to get out of it to pee.

We'll be doing badge pickup Thursday night, because matchgirl42 is on Security this year and has to be at a meeting then. So I'll see if I can spot you in the madding crowds. Or, you know, give you a call, or something.
