I have an idea. It's not a world-changing, life-affirming idea, and it's not a testament to the greatness of the human spirit or anything, but it sounded like fun. So I thought I'd put it out there and see if anybody else wants to play.

Announcing [livejournal.com profile] featherynscale's Great LJ MixTape CD Project of 2008:
In which we all make CDs and mail them to people, because, hey, it sounds like fun, and it's sort of kicking it old school in the world of BitTorrent and all that whatnot. (Also, I need more music. Who doesn't?)

Rules:
1. Sign up here.
2. Watch for a filtered post from me in which I will solicit your address. Addresses will only be seen by other people who are playing (and therefore will also be giving their addresses).
3. In the next month, make a mix CD for everyone else who signs up. It could be one mix that you send a copy of to everyone, or a CD individualized to each recipient, or a combination of the two approaches. Mail or otherwise deliver the CDs to everyone.
4. All CDs must have a theme. Themes can be based on anything you like. ("Songs with Rickenbacher Guitars", "Songs About Zombies", "Ten Songs I Think Everyone Should Own", "Songs from 1997", "Songs by Girls With Acoustic Guitars", "Songs for Driving Fast To", whatever.) CDs should be somehow labeled with the theme.
5. All the music you send out should be music you personally like.
6. Track listings are very much appreciated.
7. Commentary on the mixes you receive, posted in the LJ, is not bad either. Dicuss!

So, anybody interested in getting in on this? If we have so many people that sending CDs to all of them seems insane, we could also split into smaller groups...

Honey, I *teach* the advanced class on this. =)

That might also be true. If we split the groups, you'll probably get some but not all of us...

But I'll probably still make new mixes for all three of you, because that's how I roll. =) I haven't done mixes specifically aimed at you or [livejournal.com profile] triadruid yet, and I'm eager to test my mettle in those areas. (Although I think you'll get some good mileage out of the two mixes I just mailed.)

You're a few years younger than me... did you get to enjoy the process of mixing vinyl to cassette, or was that before your time?

Not so much with the vinyl, although I did my share of tape-to-tape in the old days.

(That's not Adrian Belew in your icon, is it?)

Ah, you missed out, son. You need to get yourself a turntable and some 12-inches, stat!

It is Adrian Belew, unless it's Ben Folds or William Shatner or Henry Rollins.

Oh, I *have* a turntable. I just have precious little to play on it, and feel little desire to be a vinyl fetishist. I got my fill of antiquated audio formats in childhood when I made my dad teach me to use the reel-to-reel so I could listen to Magical Mystery Tour, thankyouverymuch. =)

(Ben Folds! *That's* who that other guy is!)

I rarely use my turntable, but I would feel lost without it. Even though I have only five record. I don't think of myself as a fetishist, but rather "old school." This despite the fact that I don't have any intention of ever owning a cassette player ever again. Man, that format sucked. And that's the thing -- it's not just antiquity for the sake of antiquity, I have no desire for an 8-track or a cassette player. Vinyl just feels good. Okay, I guess that's a little bit fetishistic. Fine.

Reel-to-reel? WTF? Was Magical Mystery Tour released on reel-to-reel? Was anything released on reel-to-reel? Or was your dad a "pirate" as the term is currently used?

(Yup. The icon is an adaptation of a bit by Rollins in which he described his collaboration on the Folds-produced Shatner album "Has Been" and his astonishment at Folds' ability to casually phone up and summon the legendary Belew.)
