Saturday night, [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants and I went out to Balanca's so that she could dance, and I could er... watch her dance, which is plenty of voyeuristic good times. Balanca's is a prime example of how people in the Midwest generally fucking rule. On Saturday, the place was full of punk lesbians, drag queens, elderly heterosexual couples dressed for square dance, black guys in hip-hop shirts, white fratboys and their skinny girlfriends, older gay men, cute indie girls, goths, programmers, rivetheads and cowboys, to name a few. You can pretty much play subculture bingo in this bar, is what I'm saying. And everybody gets along. The music is probably not diverse enough to make the crowd happy (I could have done with a bit less hip-hop, myself -- they are rumored to do industrial night on Thursdays, which is way way more my thing), but the drinks are strong, the bartenders are kind, and it's generally a good time. But that's not the point of the post. The point of the post is that at one point, the DJ spun up Michael Jackson's Thriller. [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants and I looked at each other, trying to calculate the irony coefficient for this turn of events. And then, two drag kings stepped out onto the floor, and started to do the appropriate choreography, complete with zombie leg-twitching and scary monster posing. The dance floor cleared. They did the whole fucking number. We were duly impressed. The crowd cheered and bought them drinks. It was, in a word, brilliant.

While we're on the subject of 80's nostalgia and unlikely talents, [livejournal.com profile] triadruid and I were tossing around the idea of running a one-off spoof D&D game based on the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon. You open a box... inside is a shield, a bow, a hat, a cloak... A little bald guy in red robes comes walking out from behind a rock. All the players go "Oh, shit." This was just some idle car amusement this morning (you know how it is, you start talking about gaming, and then you're getting all nostalgic about killing Tiamat) BUT! [livejournal.com profile] triadruid can do a flawless imitation of the unicorn. Now we have to do it, because it is a shame to let a talent like that go unrecognized. :-P

Sorry, hipster irony (http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/index.php/Irony#Hipster_Irony), not actual irony.

Balanca's is a great place. One of Nate and I's regular haunts. We actually met there, celebrated our engagement and marriage there too. Lori, the owner takes full credit for bringing Nate and I together. LOL. It is quite the place for "watching". Saturday nights are the best night to go, IMO. However, they do a FABULOUS Weds night karaoke that is fun to go to, as well.

Okay, so everybody else thought the dancing thing was more compelling, but I got a new icon out of the deal.

actually,
my workload will not let me join a campaign,
but I AM (ehyeh, heh, ehyeh) interest in playing in such a one-shot game.

Balanca's sounds fun.

Also, I am so up for a one-shot game! I have been jonesin for a game for a while but haven't found anyone willing to actually *play*. I would love to play instead of DM something for a change.

I'm not sure when we would have time to do the game, but it looks like we'll be looking for a weekend-long (or at least all day Saturday) sort of experience. Probably when we're tired enough of the current campaign to have a need to mock the genre. :)

Sounds great to me. My place would be available (People can even crash on the spare beds if we wanted to make a weekend of it).

I really must go dancing with you two when I am in KC. There may be a kilt involved. ;)

You should. She'd probably enjoy having someone to dance with. I try to stay off the dance floor as a general rule. :)

Could multiple kilts on the floor entice you?

While I find kilts in pretty much any configuration enticing, I am really, really terrible at dancing, and I don't seem to be able to get any better at it. So I leave it to people who can manage it. :)

this balanca's sounds interesting.... you should drag me out sometime...

lol, I know a few ppl who can do the whole thriller thing too... actually go on youtube and somewhere theres a scary movie of an entire wedding party doing it at the reception... in dresses and tuxes... creeeeeeepy...

never seen the cartoon, should I?

In reverse order

No, I'm pretty sure it's one of those things that you have to have been there as a kid for in order to appreciate. We pulled all the episodes off the net the other month and watched a couple of them -- they're pretty dumb.

Wedding parties are scary enough as it is...

Yes, you should totally go. We don't go out very often, but this is a pretty fun outing, and we'll likely do it again sometime.

Just to let you know in case you haven't picked up the box set of the DVD's of the cartoon. It comes with a little handbook with all the cartoon characters stats and weapons and what not. Even Venger :)

That's.... astonishingly good marketing, actually. I don't have the box set -- didn't know there was such a thing until I was talking to a guy in the vendor room at Dragon*Con. Mine are all bootleg and stuff. :)
