(Actually, I kid. I've never had the Con Crud. I've also never been ghost-dosed with anything. Considering the number of people I share drinks with at Con, these statements are sort of amazing. But anyway...)

As previously mentioned, Dragon*Con was apparently the recipient of approximately eleventy billion cases of Freek energy drink in various flavors, some sugar-free. Although I have not historically been an energy drink fan, this was tasty enough to make me decide that consuming vast quantities of it was a good idea. Now, apparently, I'm an addict. Alas, it doesn't seem to be available in Kansas City, so I've been trying to fill this previously unnoticed void with other sugar-free energy drinks.

So far, I've tried:
- Red Jak's sugar-free version (which is confusing, because it seems to come in two different species - one is a silver can, and the liquid inside is red, and the other is a blue and black can, and the liquid inside is amber colored -- both taste the same, though), which tastes like strawberry soda that somebody dropped a ground-up Flintstones vitamin in.
- Rockstar Sugar-free, which tastes like bubble gum flavoring. Not like bubble gum, mind you, but the sort of fake bubble gum flavoring that goes in children's toothpaste. It has an aftertaste of Flintstones vitamin, but it's not so prominent.

Either of those are acceptable, and both are suitable in the stimulant properties division, but neither is as good as either of the Freek sugar-frees. So I'm still looking. Apparently, there are enough products on the market that whole blogs are devoted to them. Who knew?

Alas, a ginseng allergy prevents me from having a good answer. Back in my day, after walking uphill to the store, they had only three or four drinks, and none of them had ginseng. The one store down on the corner that had Jolt was lucky enough to carry it in it's six flavors, in the 20 ounce bottles, and none of them had ginseng back then. They even had a sugar free version, after a while, but by then, the market had forced them to add the horrible additive...

If you can find it, try Bawls, it's one of my favorites.

Why not order Freek shipped to you??? It's available to order from the website.....

Yeah, I saw that. Oddly, their shipping rate is really good (which I assume means that the markup on the stuff itself is insane). So I thought about it, and then got hung up on an internal discussion about appropriate quantities of soda to have shipped to one's door. Seriously, the reasons that I do or don't do things are, at times, profoundly stupid.

Heh....

I say if you can buy and store in bulk, you should. But maybe that's just me....

The sugar-free Freek drinks were pretty tasty, esp. the lemony one.

You may want to try the "Carb-Free" Rockstar (in the blue can). It's better tasting than the sugar-free version - which oddly enough looks like radioactive urine, I guess giving it its bubble-gum flavor? *laughs*

As for caffeine, SF Rockstar has 160 mgs., Freek has 208 mgs., and CF Rockstar has 240 mgs. I always wanted to try the "formerly-known-as-Cocaine" energy drink but could never find it.

I can't find the Carb-Free Rockstar here, but the Sugar-Free does say it has 0 carbs... a regular shift in packaging styles seems to be a feature of the genre. *shrug*

For the record, today I'm drinking a Joker Mad Energy, which is 'low-carb' (has sneaky sugars!) and also tastes like bubble gum flavoring. Hrm.... :) It also contains something called cyanonobalamin, which is a lot of fun to say, but I have no earthly clue what it is. To the internet! It's research time! :)

Oh, it's a B-12. Well, that was short-lived fun. :)
