Yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] triadruid and I went to see Stardust. Somebody on my flist, perhaps [livejournal.com profile] kenllama, thought it as funny as The Princess Bride, and while I don't necessarily agree with that statement, I did really enjoy Stardust, and would see it again. And besides, The Princess Bride has a pronounced lack of cross-dressing air pirates, so how can you even compare the two films? I ask you.

In addition to the aforementioned cross-dressing air pirates, Stardust also has a sort of Greek chorus of deceased princes, who sit on the sidelines of the story and offer helpful hints and snide commentary to the main characters, who can't see them. This works brilliantly, and totally saves some of the slower scenes in the film. Also, I always enjoy looking at long-haired boys in frock coats, particularly if they fence, which they do.

We didn't make it in time for all the trailers, but we felt less loss than usual about that, because it meant that we missed half of the trailer for The Dark is Rising, which nobody should have to sit through more than once anyway. I dread the coming of that film, mostly because even with the general awfulness of the trailer and the conversion of Will Stanton into an American pre-teen who engages his enemies in shopping malls, I will probably see it anyway. Alas.

On the other hand, we did think we'd go see Elizabeth: The Golden Age (large-scale naval battles! Sir Walter Raleigh! Cate Blanchett in a ludicrous variety of wigs!) and Beowulf (the heavy metal version, with Angelina Jolie as Grendel's mother! Fire and Monsters! A ridiculously A-list cast!). We have very little shame with regard to film. Alas. :)

de Niro, bay-bee! I also have very little film shame - if it's got fantasy elements, comic book characters, or shit blowing up, I'm probably there. =) For more on the stuff I'm looking forward to seeing, check out this post, complete with links to trailers. I may have to see Beowulf by myself, as my friends are dubious about the storyline and/or the animation. All I can say is: Angelina Jolie as Grendel's mom. But yes: Stardust was good fun, and will probably be a DVD purchase for me in the near future.

That sounds perilously like my list of film-to-watch criteria. I think mine also includes monsters, neo- or alt-Victoriana, and magic in urban settings, particularly. :)

Re: that last, I hope we'll get Day Watch. We got Night Watch, but only in one of the art houses, and they have a notorious back-up of films, so we get things there very late, if at all. If we don't, I'll probably end up trying to get it on DVD -- I enjoyed the first film enough to start picking up the books. Brilliant, altogether.

And The Golden Compass also totally makes the list. I read a fair amount of YA lit for a 30-year-old. I feel like I vaguely ought to have some embarrassment about that, but I just don't, you know?

Ditto on virtually every point - I'm not much on things Victorian, unless they're overtly steampunky. Daywatch was at one of the Ann Arbor art theaters about a month ago - good stuff.

*shifty glances* Sometimes I feel guilty about the amount of YA lit I read, but damnit if some of it ain't good. I'll chalk it up to getting a head start on pre-reading for my unborn children. I'm... building a library. Yeah.

Oh, and I'm totally going to see the Golden Compass, too.

And thanks for the review of Stardust. I'm definately dragging hubby to see it, now. Poor thing.

I used to pretend that I read it because I wanted to write it (and I still do have some fairly solid ideas in my brain for potential YA books). But mostly I read it for the fun. :)

I really want to see this one, as well as skinwalkers, the simpsons, chuck and larry, and ... oh probably more. I haven't got to go to the movies in a bit and probably won't be for another month or so what with the house stuff going on.

clarification

hmmm... i don't think i thought that stardust was as funny as TPB, but rather that they were of the same spirit. i particularly want there to be more movies in that vein because I OD'd on The Princess Bride in 1993 and haven't been able to watch it since. maybe when I'm 64...

i did love the cross-dressing pirates...

Sorry -- I must have misread. :) And I support more ludicrous over-the-top fantasy adventure with pirates! Yay!
