Friday night we ran a session of the Amnesia Game, which is
triadruid's and my wretched little D&D campaign. We've got seven player characters. Some time ago (about a week and a half, maybe two weeks in game time), they woke up on the floor of an evil temple, dressed in black robes, surrounded by corpses. They have no memory of their lives, of how they got to that temple, what they were doing, who they were, or (most importantly in game terms) what their skills were. As the game progresses, they get memories; sometimes these are memories of something which is useful for game mechanics purposes, sometimes they are bits of backstory, sometimes they are mere flashes of sensory impression that have to be sorted out later.
They awoke in the lower sanctuary of an evil temple carved into a hillside. Scattered around were dozens of bodies in dark robes, each showing evidence of bleeding from the eyes and ears. In the center of the room, there was an altar, which had been staved in. On the altar, in the process of merging with the rock, was a headless corpse. On one side of the room, a dead dwarf man wearing holy tattoos was pinned to the wall by an evil-looking axe. Our heroes searched the room diligently, including an initiative lead by
orcjohn to strip all of the dead men naked and take their robes. This yielded unsuspected information: all the dead men were castrated. (At this point, half of the male players squeaked in anguish, and drew up into their chairs. People are funny that way.)
They climbed the stairs, and discovered a storeroom, full of neatly arranged and categorized equipment, enough for roughly ten well-outfitted adventurers. Having no idea what they could or couldn't use, they dressed as cleverly as they could, tried out some of the weaponry, peered uselessly at spellbooks, and generally tried to sort themselves out. Thus fortified, they began to explore the temple.
