I'm not comfortable with the idea of the president of the united states saying things like "I am mindful that we're all sinners". Not only because I happen to disagree with that statement, but also because, well, there's that whole separation of church and state thing. That's an appropriate statement from a pastor or a priest, but not so much from a government official, especially the one that's supposedly running this whole show here. Or at least that's the way things go in my world.

And then there's the whole same-sex marriage thing. In my world, either marriage is a civil affair, primarily concerned with things like tax codes and property rights, and powers of attorney, and things like that, in which case it has nothing to do with religion, and morality or immorality shouldn't enter into the matter, or marriage is a religious affair, primarily concerned with creating some ideal soul-state for the moral advancement of the people entering into it, in which case, religious institutions should get to decide who they will and will not marry, and government shouldn't enter into the matter.

But hey, that's just me, and I could be wrong.

Anyone who has ever gone through a divorce will tell you that marriage is a contract, pure and simple. Actually it was always a contract. That it was a sacrament has had very little to do with it, it was always chattel for chattel (wife/dowery for bride price). A direct property exchange. The whole love thing only came about with the Victorian ideal and that happened because dear Vickers happend to fall in love with the prince she was stuck with, Albert.

Bush however is a moron who sincerely believes that God is talking to him...of course he's going to call anyone who is doing anything he thinks is "wrong" a sinner.

Contract or not it was overseen most of the time by a religons agency of some sort. Ergo, veiwed as having religous ramifications.

Actually, that was not the case until it was codified by the Council of Trent in the 1500s. Prior to that marriage was a civil affair that took place publically, but often not in an actual church, most often the civil ceremony was held in the most public place in a community.

Coincidence? I think not ...
