I just discovered/remembered/became aware that when I moved from Jacksonville to Kansas City (that was in 2001, for those of you keeping track), I never closed my old bank account. I wonder if I had any money in it. I wonder if I can close it out without remembering the account number. I bet the answer to both of those questions is No, but it's worth a shot. I sent them an email asking what information I would have to provide. I can give them my old ATM card number, since I discovered that the other day, but I bet that won't do it. Maybe I have some Really Old Checks in my files.

Also, there is no mood icon for 'stupid'. Don't people on LJ ever feel stupid?

One possibility

You could make a potentially entertaining fiction exercise out of imagining what might've happened with whatever balance was left in the bank.

Personally, I'm convinced that the bank was purchased in a merger, and along the way the account was hacked by a a cabal of Nigerian 419 scammers in Lagos. They've since wisely invested the funds in the account, multiplying the initial investment a thousand times over in a few weeks, and deposited the money (minus enough for their operating expenses) in an off-shore escrow, then used your identity to defraud the witless and murder an ignorant, greedy semi-retired washing machine repairmen from Oxblood Cove, Wisconsin named Milton P. Fiscarson, who was dumb enough to go to Lagos and try to collect his five million dollar reward for offering to shelter the funds of the reputed former Vice President who fled during a coup that never really occured. Mr. Fiscarson probably would've just been rolled and left beaten within an inch of his life, but due to a nervous condition of the colon, his extreme flatulence caused his captors to agree to execute him and leave his body to be trampled by wildebeasts.

Of course, the money could also still be in the bank in Florida.

That poor farty bastard. And all that for the 1.87 I probably left in the account! It's like Payback, but sadder.

Generally they'll be able to identify you with some set of information. Amy forgets her account number all the time.

They usually want you to come into the branch for that, though, right? Of course, that might satisfy my need to travel, except that I've been to Jacksonville rather too much for my tastes...

Actually, we've managed to do things over the phone more than once by just giving enough identifying information.
