Last night, [livejournal.com profile] triadruid and I were huddled in my bedroom around my little space heater, working on background for our upcoming D&D campaign (in case you were not yet aware that we are vast dorks, let it be so noted at this time). [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants came down to show off her clever new painting gloves which she has made out of recycled socks. (Did I mention it gets really damned cold at EHQ sometimes?)

She was admiring my new bookcase (all the books have shelves now!) and remarking that my room hardly looked like it belonged in a college dorm at all anymore. And then, she looks over at us and our books and dice and pencils and says, "Well... except for you guys camped out on the bed with your D&D books." And I'm thinking, "I could go get some beer, that would help, right? Maybe some Jolt Cola?" Ah, well. You can only be young once, but you can be dorky your whole life through.

I miss college. But mostly I miss the part where the first thing that you have to do in the morning starts at 11 a.m. and even that is sort of optional unless it's test day. Maybe one day I will become independently wealthy and not have to come to work anymore. And then I can stay up all night and screw around, and sleep all day. Today, though, is not that day.

My room: between the futon for sleeping, computer on a card table, and the set of shelves covered with disc golf frisbies (almost 3 dozen of the silly things), I understand the "dorm room" look all too well. Apparently one is never too old to have fun and live like a college student ...

... unfortunately for me, I again have too many books for my shelves, they're spilling onto the floor ... I either need to make a run to a place that will buy some books off of me that I don't intend to re-read ten times (because I do that), or find more shelving.

D&D? Someone is playing D&D?
Can I play too?

I think we can probably squoosh you in :) It's going to be a somewhat odd campaign though, so it might not be the sort of thing you're up for. I'll send you an email with specifics.

In fact, if you're in, I think that fills up our game pretty nicely.

Graduate school is a surefire way to extend student life well past its natural end. Especially if you're like me and go into an academic field where, when I'm done, I'll just cross over to the other side of the classroom and keep the same hours.

I wish I had thought of that when I was an undergrad. It's much harder (though not impossible) to manage it when you have structured your life around having a job and whatnot.

I'm a little more hedged than you were -- If I fail to keep my job, we lose the house, more than likely. Again, it's not impossible. This is not an excuse. Just stating that the difficulty rating of the move is a little higher than it used to be.

Where are you working at now, sis?

Nowhere in particular. I pick up a little odd cash participating in psychology experiments, but my job right now is being a student so that I can get a job later that 1) doesn't make me want to spork my eyes out, and 2) allows me to repay the student loans that keep me from having to work this year. But I *did* have a life that was structured around job and whatnot, and I didn't find it particularly difficult to ditch that and go back to school.

That would be a lack of mortgage talking, that would.

Mortgage, family, and so on. The movement from single apartment life to grad school, not so bad. The move that would have to happen first, the one where I break it off with my partners and abandon them, that's the rough part.

Oooooh....D&D....yum...

I wish I could participate in your game, odd though it might be (as you told [livejournal.com profile] capriciouslass). I miss playing my sneaky-sneaky characters.... ;;proceeds to geek a little on D&D;;

Should I mention that I actually own a Deck of Many Things?

Every home should have one... .oh wait. That's not right. :)

I quit playing D&D years ago. Not that I stopped playing RPGs, just D&D.

And I guess I can't hide my dorkiness--I did edit a couple of the rule books for Gygax's current game, so my name is forever attached to EGG in that fashion.

I miss your college days too, and I only got to enjoy about half of 'em. Even after all these years I look back on that as the best time of my life.

I remember them fondly. And not just for the sex. :)

Honestly luv (and I hope you take offense to this), but I wasn't even thinking about the sex. I was referring to the 3a.m. gaming sessions, and random students accosting us & saying things like "Join us in our quest for farm animals!" All the time spent at the theater doing Rocky, and later at V.I.

Oh yes, if there was any time in my life I wouldn't mind reliving (especially knowing what I do now) it'd be then.

But hell, now isn't too bad, either.
