I had a dream last night about trying to check into a hotel while approximately eleventy billion things were going on to distract me from said purpose. People were streaming in and out, we were in the wrong hotel, we couldn't find an ATM that worked to get the money, we were mistaken for other people, interesting discussions were going on in other rooms, goth girls were trying to talk us up to their hotel rooms, and somehow I had this skein of yarn that I felt that I had to learn how to crochet into a hat before anything else could happen.

This can only mean it's time to start this year's Dragon*Con cycle. Of course, we're still paying off last year's trip, but that's okay. We should be able to sort that out pretty quickly. And if we're clever, we'll get badges this month, while they're still $50 apiece. Our crew for the trip so far consists of myself, [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants, [livejournal.com profile] triadruid, Kittenpants' brother Gangly and cousin Goofy, but a few others have made rumbling noises about it and might be dragged along in our wake.

Also, I have grand costume ambitions for this year's outing. I think we'll be with the pirates in the parade again, since we already have all of that get-up. We're doing new Wheel of Time drag, though, with [livejournal.com profile] triadruid aiming towards Sammael, and me looking into a Sea Folk Wavemistress' outfit. This may require piercing my nose, which I'm okay with. Also, I'd like to do a Promethea costume as well (Barbara Shelley as Promethea, though, not Sophie -- I like Sophie's outfit better, but it's more complicated, and I'm down with Barbara as the world's only fat dumpy superhero. I think I can manage that). I looked at it last year, and the base costume is pretty easy, but the headpiece stymies me. (There's a pretty good scan here. Barbara's outfit is a short Greek-style dress (fastened over one arm instead of both, more like man's dress or maenad's), a golden 'girdle', sandals, some fancy tattooing, gold vambraces and this winged headdress sort of thing. In earlier issues, she carries a caduceus staff. I'm pretty sure I can pull all of that off except the headdress, and even that I may have an inspiration on.)

It's probably too early to start getting excited about this, and yet, here I am. Anybody want to come with?

Excellent. We'll probably see you there, then. :)

I think I can sort out the headdress, at least in certain materials. What are you envisioning the girdle being made out of?

I suspect that I can re-engineer that from the sort of accessory piece one gets in halloween costumes for warrior princesses.

Alternately, although in the comics it appears to be made of metal, I'm envisioning that a leather under-bust corset or waist-cincher might be wrapped in thin, shiny fabric and passed off well enough. And I have some general desire to own such a thing anyway.

I figure I have a little more wiggle room on that piece since it is worn flat against the body, where the headdress has to support itself. I could be wrong, though.

Okay, I've read about it, seen your pictures, and loved the quips.

I think I'm going to see if I can figure out how to make it to this one.

Yay! You will have the best time ever. Also, you will need a Firefly outfit of some sort. :)

Costuming isn't my strong suit. I'll probably have to seek outside help for that part.

That's one of the brilliant things about Browncoat fandom, IMHO -- the costuming is Really Easy. I would be happy to assist in your efforts, should you need.

True. I've got a pair of Khaki Cargo pants. Those, plus a T-Shirt, go out and get a decent looking gun belt and boots and I've got Jayne's outfit, minus the muscular build (that'll take a lot longer to work out.)

Dude, one of the best Jayne's at last year's D*C was a young woman of maybe 115 lbs, 5'4" tops.

Yep!

I'm in. Do we want to re-vamp the "First Level Character" idea, or just give it a miss this year? Also- unless it's in the evening I'll likely not really be doing that much dressing up. On the other hand, to make up for all the work I intend to be doing I'll have to party extra hard to make up for it. ; )
