Corporate America is not a meritocracy, especially if you happen to be of the half of the population with tits.
I had begun to forget that, and then, I got a new haircolor and cut which has apparently dramatically improved my appearance.
Now the CEO who has been giving me hell for fundamentally no reason for months, and the CFO who occasionally directs comments to me like "The only thing you have going for you here at the moment is that I like you" have nothing but good things to say about me and my work.
Note that nothing has changed in my workstyle, I am still doing the three and a half jobs for the pay of one job that I have been doing all along with the same degree of skill and accuracy.
Hell, I wandered into the office thirty minutes late this morning, and the CEO stops me in the hall to say what a lovely shade of lipstick I have on.
I think that in the next life, I want to be a guy. This is just bullshit.

If you're a guy, and your life sucks, a haircut won't change anything... I'm not sure that is preferable. ;-)

If it was possible to apologize on behalf of my gender, I would. But since they haven't made me their spokesperson and I'd refuse it if appointed, I can't; so I won't.

If it's any consolation, I've been told that it's not as bad here in Seattle as it is on the East Coast. I don't know how that compares to the MidWest.

No big - in fact, I'm not even sure this is really a gender issue. It just reads that way to me, since I'm a chick and all my bosses are guys. In any case, it's the underlying bit about what you look like being more important than what you do that gets under my skin. I think it probably happens to guys too, just perhaps not in such a transparent manner.
And I congratulate you on your refusal to be the spokesperson for your gender - if the corresponding post were offered to me, there are words which would be said involving a rolling doughnut and the sort of acrobatic tricks one might attempt with it.
