Revelations of the weekend:
1. Having an interest in attending costumed events is a little like having a pot-smoking habit: at first, it seems like you will always be able to buy everything you need, but eventually, the urge to make your own paraphenalia will hit you, and then, nothing is safe. Went to Ren Faire yesterday, found Nothing that answered the question "What shall I wear under my new frock coat?" successfully. Saw many beautiful shirts, but none were what I was looking for. Which is, of course, something that will pass as pirate attire, made of something that isn't mostly polyester (the shirt I wore at Dragon*Con probably came from a Halloween costume, and is perilously close to plastic and completely unsuitable for warm-weather wear), and cut for someone who isn't Rennie-Sized (which is perhaps 6'2", 280, I'm not sure. I mean, I'm pretty big, but really, I could use most of the things I looked at as a tent.). So I'll probably be hitting the fabric store and begging for machine loans sometime this winter. I believe that somehow, if I follow the directions on the pattern, it will not matter that I know nothing about sewing, it will just work. This is the kind of thinking that gets me in trouble when I try to pretend that I can cook, so I know it to be false, and yet.
2. The Flaming Ball of Gas in the Sky has it in for me. While I was able to manage the day at KCRF without getting exhausted or having my feet protest (which I attribute to the recent addition of long walks to my routines), I got a monstrous sun/dehydration headache about 5:00. Blech. Fortunately, we were scheduled to go visit [livejournal.com profile] adammaker and [livejournal.com profile] jackjob after Faire, and if there's anyone who's likely to be able to help with that sort of thing, it would be [livejournal.com profile] adammaker. He gave me excedrin and lavendar oil, and after a time, all was well. I don't know what to do about avoiding this sort of thing in the future, but I expect more water and perhaps a pair of sunglasses are in it.
3. I am getting old. The Libra Birthday party was much fun, but I ended up asleep on the futon with the cat for about an hour from 1:30-2:30 or so. Everyone was kind enough to let me sleep, which was nice. But it would be nicer to be able to manage to stay awake.

Also of note, but not particularly relevatory, [livejournal.com profile] triadruid, [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants and I bought Chamelons (which are articles of clothing in this sense, and not lizards) from an amiable acid-head at Faire, and they are really, really neat. You can make them into practically any sort of clothing, and a handful of non-clothing things as well. Provided, of course, that you can work out what to zip or tie in order to get the thing to be the shape you want. Still, fun to play with. I've been envious of [livejournal.com profile] niveus_tigris' Chameleon for quite some time. And now I have one, yay.

1.a. Having an interest in costumed events means you have friends who can point you to the people who do *their* costume pieces. Let me know when you find the fabric you want to use...

That's also true. I tend to assume, though, that those people are busy beyond imagining. :)

Having made mine do tricks...

Yes, I realize how dirty that subject line looks. I can help you guys riddle out how to make your chameleons into various things. It really is the best article of transformable clothing evar.

In a related note, the swordsman's shirts I have (that are not tents, made mostly or entirely from cotton and actually fit well) came either from Enchanted Gifts or http://www.by-the-sword.com/.

You'll want to check out this page: http://www.by-the-sword.com/acatalog/Shirts.html.

I had it in my mind to ask you what clever things you had discovered about yours. I haven't had any time to play with mine yet, though. The amiable acidhead put one on me at faire in such a manner as to make a backless dress, which I thought was very funny. So I think I could make that, but pants? No clue yet.

Thank you for the link -- they have some interesting possibilities. Looks like they either have some of the same suppliers as Museum Replicas, or they bought out some of their backstock. :)

So, the only reference to Cameleon Clothing on Teh Intarweb is this re-print of an article from Mother Earth News in spring of 1982: http://www.motherearthnews.com/DIY/1982_March_April/Chameleon_Clothing

Rock Ridgeway does not have a website, which is a gorram shame, becasue I bet he'd get a lot of business if more people knew about his stuff.

If the sort of shirt you're seeking is kind of like the burgundy satin one you keep borrowing from [livejournal.com profile] agrnmn, then I've got the pattern for it and would be happy to make it for you -- given the fabric and a bit o'time.

You would only be third in line, and I've got a feeling this will be a Winter of Textile for me. :)

Something very much like that, yeah. Let's talk?

I left early, so someone had to take on the duty of falling asleep in the middle of the festivities...
I agree that it would be nicer to stay awake, though I can never seem to manage it.

By any chance did you stop at Tyger's Toggs? I know that most of his shirts are unisex, made from cotton material, and look good with almost any "period" look.

That would be the tent I'm talking about :)

We have a few of his shirts, which are comfy and nice, but which are large enough that all three of us could fit in them at a go. Which again, sometimes nice, but would bunch up like anything under the coat.

Went to Ren Faire yesterday, found Nothing that answered the question "What shall I wear under my new frock coat?"

But, my dear, don't you see? That's the answer!!! What should you wear? Nothing!!

I'll bet you didn't even know you thought of that ...
