I was talking to orcjohn the other day, and I promised him some pictures of me when I was young enough to be blonde. I thought this one was going to be one of those, but I'm misremembering and have some sort of a chestnut-colored wash in here. But I thought it would be fun to post anyway, because the other person in this picture is wildnsquirrelly. I think we're about 16 in this shot.

And this is the kid who had such a hard time with acceptance in school? Gods, you were a pretty teenager. I'd totally have dated you then, too. :D

I think what it is is that if I looked like that now, I would be a pretty almost-thirty. What's good at 28 is bad at 16. I mean, I don't think I was the ugliest girl at school, but I was definitely in the bottom 10. They threw rocks at me. One day, one of wildnsquirrelly's classmates came up to us in the hall and said to him, "Dude, you have the ugliest girlfriend I've ever seen. She's like a dog." This stuff happened all the time.

I do appreciate your vote of confidence, though.

Actually, while I'm certain that my tastes have changed somewhat, you were a pretty 16 year-old too. Maybe Army brats/midwesterners are uglier than I've been led to beleive, but you'd have been in the solid top third at the schools I went to, by almost any metric. Maybe it's the soft-light focus...*shrug* I didn't want to get into the rock-throwing/name-calling issue unless you wanted to; I just don't get the reason for it.

In other news, in that photo at least, wildnsquirrely is a weird lookin' kid (damn near ugly). I can see why he waited.

I don't know about that other part. I think he's adorable. And is now, too, for all that he's built more like GI Joe. But waited for what?

Midwest makes no difference that I know of. I bet I could have beaten you in the dog-ugly department at 16, but I've destroyed most photographic evidence of my existance before age 20 so there's no way to check. Still, with you on the having rocks thrown bit.

May I remind you, honey, that there were 3 general groups of people at that school: 1)the preppies/athletes/rich snots, 2)rednecks, and 3)normals. We were in the 3rd group. Group 1 thought they were all that, but it was self-delusion, and they had to pick at others to make themselves feel better. Group 2, well, they weren't the pick of the litter, even for rednecks, and I should know, I've got a whole family of them.

(I always comfort myself with the fact that, my nemesis in grade school, Cheyanne (who would have been in group 1 above if she had gone to our HS), skipped out on her first semester of college, ran off to south florida, spawned about 6 or 7 kids, all by different daddies, got disowned by her then horrified parents, and is now living on welfare.)

You were quite pretty in high school, and you are absolutely gorgeous now. I still remember the first day I met you, and for the rest of that week feeling on top of the world, because such a pretty, smart and cool girl like you took the time to socialize with a shy bookworm like me!

You. Are. Gorgeous. And I'm going to keep telling you that until you truly believe it. Know it, believe it, live it.
