Things that do and don't go beep

Yesterday, a Mysterious Package arrived in the post. "ThinkGeek" it said on the label, and I went, "eh?". For lo, I am a ThinkGeek shopper, but I was pretty sure everything I'd ordered had already come in. So, there was a rush to open the mysterious package, to find a Polarity game, from someone who I presume to be
lexpendragon. Or, at least, I think so. The internet is really, really great (for porn!), but it sometimes leads to situations in which you only know people by their internet names. But thank you, Probably 'Lex, for a very excellent toy. I've not gotten to play with it yet, but J., our houseguest, was doing some quite impressive things with it last night.
Me, last night, I was running about getting the last pieces for
triadruid's upgrade. At some point during the contemplation of this process, possibly when J. was mocking me about being excited about the fact that the case came with extra screws, I announced to the household, "I like things that go beep!", at which point
kittenpants chimed in with "Beep! I go beep!", and there was much amusement.
The putting together of the new machine was met with the usual disasters. I bled on it, cursed at it, dropped a thumbscrew down the front of the case where it was a pain in the ass to retrieve, looked at some bits of it and went, "What even are you? I don't know what you are or where you go!", and so on and so forth. Finally got the thing together about midnight, then plugged it in, and *pfffft*, it won't turn on. Not like it won't POST, it just won't turn on. No power nowhere in the box itself. Don't know why. Got pissed off, went to bed. Probably, in my sleepy and addled state, I've forgotten to plug something in, or plugged it in backwards, or something. Or,
triadruid might have been trying to tell me last night that he hadn't flipped the power switch on the back of the machine. Maybe. I knew he was saying something about the switch, but was too sleepy to tell if he was saying he had flipped it, or hadn't. *shrug* So, I'm going to look at it again tonight, and if I can't manage to make it work, I imagine I'll be crying for help. Can one of you technical creatures back me up here, if needed?

re: the switch
Date: 2005-12-20 03:22 pm (UTC)I imagine it's just a power lead inside somewhere that we missed.

Date: 2005-12-20 03:51 pm (UTC)If so, something you may want to check would be the configuration on the motherboard for where you plug in the ports from the case itself leading to the Power Switch and the reset switch.
If they aren't sitting on the right pins, you'll never get the damn thing to turn on.

Date: 2005-12-20 04:20 pm (UTC)You might also want to check the manual from the Mobo and see if the CMOS is grounded on pins 1&2. Little plastic pin.
Sometimes they come in weird combo's, though I'll put money on the Power Switch leads being wrong. Done that too many times myself.
P.S. Nice to know that you have to bleed when making a PC as well. It seems that everytime I install something new on my computer, or even build a new system I always bleed.
Sacrifice to the good computing gods.

Date: 2005-12-20 04:33 pm (UTC)Also, yeah, the bleeding seems to be a required part of the process. It's important to note, though, that in this case, I was actually bleeding before I even popped the case open. It was sort of like I thought about building a machine, and the thought alone was enough to make me bleed. Techie stigmata. It was a little creepy.

Power
Date: 2005-12-20 04:05 pm (UTC)Sounds like a voltmeter might be a useful thing to dig out at this point. Though ATX power supplies are weird.
Once I was building a machine and was puzzled when the power seemed to come on just long enough for the POST to begin, then it died and restarted, over and over. I returned the case/powersupply. Later I realized that the power supply was probably set to 240V rather than 120V.
Re: Power
Date: 2005-12-20 04:32 pm (UTC)Anyway, it doesn't even get to the over/underpowered sort of stage right now, you just push the button and nothing happens. So I'm envisioning that something is plugged to the wrong pins, perhaps, and after checking that, I'll look at inoperable components. I hope it's option A and not option B, because option A is a much quicker and easier fix...
