Book report
Oct. 17th, 2005 01:24 pmI finished Knife of Dreams this morning. WoW!
The Good:
- Things are starting to wrap up. Plotlines are being tied off left and right. It's starting to look like there might be a Last Battle after all.
- I finally know why Rand went to Far Madding.
- Chock full o' Mat! (I <3 Mat.)
- Perrin no longer a whiny protagonist.
- Rand still crazy.
- Lots of people get what they richly deserve.
- Galad unexpectedly badass, like Luke Skywalker at the beginning of Jedi. Egwene expectedly badass, like Luke Skywalker at the end of Jedi, only Buddhist.
- Seanchan think Thom Merrilin is a mighty general.
- Steam engines!
- Ogiers! (No ogiers with steam engines, though, which is a shame).
The Bad:
- Forsaken are sort of pussies, lately.
- There are still Forsaken we haven't seen at large in the world, which is odd at this stage of the game.
- Elayne is still a whiny protagonist. Oh god, is Elayne a whiny protagonist. I hate Elayne.
- Hardly any Graendal.
- Asmodean still dead.
The Random:
- Rand really is an avatar of Tyr.
- The Forsaken are kind of sorry for him. Some of them, anyway.
- The question of whether Lews Therin is a real voice in Rand's head or a made-up one is addressed (this has been a topic of conversation between myself and
triadruid from time to time.)
- I still think Mazrim Taim is a Forsaken. I think Jordan said he wasn't Demandred, but I'm not sure that rules out him being other Forsaken.
- The Red Ajah is batshit crazy.
Overall, a worthwhile installment. Although, I liked Path of Daggers, which reportedly makes me an unreliable source where these things are concerned. It's good to see some resolution to a lot of things, and a serious preparation to move into the next phase of the story. People are focused on the logical end of these events and have mostly ceased to just wander around and angst about things. Jordan does introduce one completely new element (I think -- my memory is short and full of holes) that I had to avail myself of the index about, which was a bit odd, but still, there's a whole book to go, at least. He could well introduce a major new character at this point and still maybe be able to wind it up properly. **eyeroll**
