How I spent my weekend...
Oct. 3rd, 2005 12:17 pmFun times this weekend.
First,
breathofgold gave me a black eye, which was exciting. I occasionally work for her, role-playing with the med students for evaluation purposes. This pays well, and gives me the opportunity to mess with people, so that's all good. This weekend's exercise: woman comes in complaining of stomach pain. For extra bonus points, she's covered in bruises. Student's job: ask about the bruises, find out who's beaten her up, help her make a plan to end her exposure to violence. They did a fine job of that, so that was sort of reassuring. And
breathofgold is an excellent hand at trauma makeup. I went home to
kittenpants, who had forgotten what I was doing that morning, and immediately went "Oh my god! What happened to you?!" upon my entering the room. She then suggested that I leave the makeup on for the later alarming of
triadruid, who gave much the same initial reaction, but recovered faster. Also, the job netted me most of 3 DragonCon badges for next year, WOO!
Saturday evening, we went to the DeviantArt KC meeting, which was not nearly as awful as I had feared it might be. Not being an artist myself, I have some (not unfounded) concerns about whether or not I can successfully hang out with a group of artists. These concerns turned out to be sort of irrelevant, as the gathered crowd also included writers and photographers, and mostly wanted to talk about ways in which we were all geeks instead. I am on solid ground with geeks. Lesson learned: Apparently, any group of people gathered for dinner which contains me will eventually say something about furry porn and/or donkey shows.
Sunday we dragged out for a matinee of Serenity. Going in, I remarked that I hoped it would be good, because if the film were bad, my list of people to kick in the shins would be long and varied, and spread out around the country. As it turned out, the film was okay. Not shin-kicking bad, not "I want my two hours back" bad, but not stupendously good either. Well within the range of "I'm glad we went to the cheap show." I loved the look-and-feel of the film. I liked most of the characters. Story was okay. Would have benefitted from a dialect coach, a less heavy-handed lighting designer, and a more draconian film editor. All in all, 50% laughing, 20% cheering, 30% rolling my eyes and groaning. Bonus points: score was fantastic, and chopsticks in space were unanimously voted to be a good idea. Most marked-down concepts: not bolting stuff down in space was unanimously voted to be a terrible idea, relationships not approved by the moral majority never seem to work out, wanted to hear what the assassin thought the captain's sin was. Also was confused about the language/culture. The rebels have the whole wild west railroad Chinese/American thing going on, which I can support, but the Alliance guy sounds like a Brit. Posited
triadruid, "That's because the bad guy is always British." Could be, could be. Anyway, I'm starting to understand what makes people write fanfiction. I'm immediately in love with some of these characters, notably the mechanic and the troublesome fellow with the grenades (description provided to save you lot the trouble of correcting my spelling).
Later Sunday, all anxiety about low-budget space-related programming was resolved by a bit of Red Dwarf, thanks to the generosity of
fionnabhar and family. Good times. "The things this boy can do with Alphabetty Spaghetti...." :-D
Also, it was interesting to note that the topic of conversation among said family after viewing Corpse Bride was whether or not I'd reconciled with Johnny Depp as a result of said film. The girls were sure that we were on the mend. And they are correct. I absolve Mr. Depp of all injury done to me by his portrayal of Willy Wonka. However, voice-acting will very rarely gain anyone any points on my Celebrity Sexiness Index, so Mr. Depp remains in the #2 position. Will he regain the top spot, or is the age of Alan Cumming here to stay? Tune in next week to find out more.
