Thermite is a natural byproduct of armoring and metalworking. Aluminum filings and ferrous oxide (the powdered black dust that permeates everything when you sand mild steel). While it is a very stable compound (pile of metal dust, doesn't sound scary) it is used in large scale welding operations and in specific military grenades.

Directions also exist on the internet on how to mix thermite with plaster of paris or paper mache to make VERY destructive lawn gnome ornaments. While magnesium strips are usually used by college students, a layman could use a sparkler.

The discussion was started because one hapless armorer had gotten flash burns and a ruined machine from not keeping his work area clear. In case of societal breakdown, thermite is one of those useful McGyvern type things I hope to be able to apply. 8-)
