In Great Falls, South Carolina, Darla K. Wynne, the Wiccan who successfully sued the town for starting their council meetings with prayers to Jesus Christ and refusing to allow non-sectarian prayers or prayers from other faiths, is now involved in a suit to have the town pay her $65,000 legal bills. The Assembly of God church has offered to cover the tab if the city is forced to pay.

Let's think about that for a moment -- the Ass of God can cough up $65,000 out of unbudgeted thin air to cover court costs for some other entity? Man, our lot can't even make a $25,000 a year budget. We think we're doing good when we can send $50 to some other worthy cause (like when the Hindu temple got vandalized after 9/11).

Anyway, good info and commentary on the matter here.

Note especially the bits where people broke into her house and killed and tortured her pets. There's a word for people who think that Jesus wants them to behead parrots.... "schizophrenic".

Apparently it wasn't satisfying enough for some religious hipsters to picket dead gay men, because they are now picketing fallen soldiers' funerals, saying they are going to hell for supporting our country. I don't know about you, but that sure makes me want to convert...

Yeah, Phelps is a dick. You know, I didn't believe in him before I moved out to the Great Midwest. I had heard of him, but I thought that sort of thing couldn't possibly be real -- perhaps he was some sort of folk anti-hero or fabulous monster. But no! No, there really are people who protest funerals!

You have to kind of like him though, if you're on my side, because he's so crazy and offensive that you'd think he'd highlight the absurdity of the anti-gay message, like people who carry signs that say 'Menstruation is Murder' highlight the absurdity of the 'birth-control-is-abortion' argument. I mean, the man calls people 'fag enablers'. Think about that for a moment -- what is a 'fag enabler'?

OMG... That is hilarious... I would guess that is the pathetic attempt by the ignorant to sound like they have an education...

You're right, though. People like him do make everyone else see how ridiculous it is.

Tell me, though... you were only kidding about the menstruation is murder signs, right? lol.. I know I should know the answer to this, but after reading that article, I just don't know anymore...

I had more faith in people before I started working customer service for AT&T. I'll have to admit that when we started getting phone calls from certain states, I would cringe... That's when I realized that maybe we shouldn't encourage everyone to vote...

I have yet to see signs. I have, however, heard that opinion expressed by some of the real raving loonies on that side of the argument. I have in the past, given serious consideration to loudly espousing that view in the hopes that it might shake some of the less loony loonies off of the tree.

Just like it's really difficult for people with minor prejudices against gay people to stand next to Phelps, I'd hope that it would be really difficult for people of conscience and reason who happen to be on the other side of the abortion issue from me to stand next to me and my menstruation sign.

If the gods don't provide the heroes and villains, sometimes you gotta invent 'em.
