Back to work, thinking about film
Sep. 15th, 2003 09:00 amI'm back at work after my week of plague. My left eyeball hurts. I swear, it's got to be something every day - my organs and systems do a lottery each morning to determine which random body part is going to hurt that day.
And why not the eye?
triadruid and I went to see Once Upon a Time in Mexico last night, which was fun overall, but full of things that offended my squeamishness about eyes and lack thereof. I fully expected screaming nightmares about the last few scenes with Johnny Depp's character (not a spoiler - you can see what happens to him in the publicity stills), but somehow they didn't come. Which is good - I embrace the concept of Johnny Depp as all the good things I like to think about when I'm semi-conscious and I will not endure having nightmares about him - that would simply be more than the gods could ask of me.
Other note about the film - at one point, you see a shot of Mickey Rourke's chihuahua, which is wearing a tag declaring that his name is 'Moco', who was the drug-lord villain in El Mariachi. I am using this fact to support my theory that Steve Buscemi's character in Desperado was supposed to be the pit bull from El Mariachi. Dog to man, man to dog. It works in my world.
I hadn't seen Desperado before last week - I was sort of expecting it to be similar in style/tone/etc. to El Mariachi, which I really enjoyed. But no. It's like the comic book version. And Once Upon a Time in Mexico is sort of the hollywood action movie based on the comic book version - everything is bigger, louder, redder, and bloodier. Everything is exaggerated to beyond life-size proportions. Which was definitely fun.
If you should go see the film, pay attention to the opening bits where the bartender (Cheech Marin) is telling Agent Sands (Johnny Depp) about the mythic Mariachi - he gets to a point where he's talking about El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) and Carolina (Salma Hayek) --
triadruid and I both could swear that Cheech says "She was as dangerous as he was beautiful." And, while we agreed with this assessment, it seemed terribly odd coming out of Cheech's mouth. If you see it, give us a report on that, would you?
