Stubborn

I talked to my mother for like 30 seconds this morning. She is not going to evacuate, despite the fact that it looks like Frances is headed right for them. Despite the fact that they started pulling boats out of Mayport this morning. It runs in my family, the stubbornness. In her old house, I wouldn't have worried, but now they live *right on the river*. So that's fun.

I'm hoping she is at least going to batten down then? Does she have all of the emergency supplies she will need?
I know being prepared and having your house boarded over will help, but I agree that staying in your home in the path of an oncoming hurricane isn't the smartest thing in the world.
Parents, what can you do with them?

I know, they're like kids, but older.

Don't you just love parenting your parents?

Having grown up on the Gulf Coast, I can relate. We always laughed that the Catholics, Lutheran, and Episcopaleans had purple candles for two seasons: Lent and Hurricane.

Yes. My mother loves hurricanes (they're building a house in Tampa as I speak). When she was growing up in RI, they'd leave their house in the city when a hurricane was coming...go down to the beach house...and have a friggin' bathtub gin party.

I've even brought Rowan down to the beach once to witness a rain line hit the shore. It went something like this:
Wait. Wait. Wow. Wow. Run. Run.

Purple candles are for Advent.

True. I misspoke, much to my embarrassment. They're Advent candles. That makes them go better with the Advent wreath, I guess. :-)

I'll chalk it up to trying to gack a peek at LJ while I supposed to be teaching a class of 29 seventh graders.

If it is any consolation, my mother, her parents and a handful of other relatives live in Rockledge and Cocoa Beach. Having lived there for many years, most of them have homes built to endure the storms. I'd still rather they pick up and go stay in Alabama with other relatives, but they can't be bothered.
