This weekend
Apr. 21st, 2008 11:24 amThis weekend kicked a lot of ass. Some of it was mine. *grin*
Friday night at Gaia Games Night, I learned to play Ticket to Ride, which has been mouldering in my games cabinet since
triadruid bought it for me at Yule. It's actually a fairly simple game, and a lot of fun, but the rules booklet fails to communicate that it would be either simple or fun, so we had sort of shied away from it. Fortunately,
demimortal and
kaymyth knew how to play already and were willing to talk everyone else through it.
Saturday morning,
triadruid and I got up early to go do the EarthWalk for Bridging the Gap. It was a little bit cold, but the route is nice, and we had a fine time walking. The walk is in Shawnee Mission Park, which is dog-friendly, so many doggies of all shapes and sizes accompanied the walkers and festival-goers. We met a cairn terrier/scottie mix who was the wolfiest-looking small dog in the history of the world, a borzoi, a golden retriever with its hair cut down to a sort of odd wooly texture (I didn't know they had an undercoat at all!) and many other four-legged creatures. We got some good data from the EarthFest exhibitors (which will no doubt find its way to a journal or mailing list Near You), and organic peanut butter in a squeeze-pack, which was far more delightful to me than it strictly ought to have been. We also resolved that next year, by the gods, we're putting together a big group of pagan walkers, and we're going to have a flag, and sing Old Time Religion or similarly obnoxious songs while we walk.
Unfortunately, I destroyed the only pair of walking shoes I owned at Blue River Cleanup, so I had to walk in my boots. These boots, though brilliantly comfortable, lack any sort of ankle support for long walks. Between the footwear and the fact that it has not been warm enough to do much walking here until this week (which is to say that I'm not in my best shape for walking), I managed to earn myself some pretty amazing pain in my legs and ass, which has lingered through to today. Oh well.
We cooled down from all the exertion of EarthFest by heading to the movies to see The Forbidden Kingdom. This turned out to be very silly, but a lot of fun. It was also a lot like seeing every wu xia film ever made, thrown into a blender with The Wizard of Oz, but hey. We don't ask for much in films about ass-kicking for the Monkey King. We like the Monkey King.
Saturday evening,
triadruid and I went over to
popefelix and
ruisseau's place for a bit of party. Allegedly, this was going to be Movie Night, but instead we just chatted, drank, ate, and played KURS. A good time was had by all, and we got to meet some lovely folks. The movies weren't missed. :) Also, importantly, I discovered that the Edradour I'd bought last week and found to be generally uninteresting is much, much more interesting if you add a bit of water. Very heartening, that.
Sunday was a day for sleeping in, hallelujah, and then running off for Gaia ritual, all about abundance and prosperity. I love abundance and prosperity. Also, we kicked off the pledge drive for the year. To celebrate,
triadruid and I went out for an abundance of sushi at Haru. At Haru, we were waited on by a fellow who used to work at 75th Street Brewery, and who remembered us from when we'd been at 75th Street some many months ago, and remembered that I take lemon with my diet coke. Impressive waiter-fu!
Also, somewhere in there, I had the first root beer float I've had in over a year. Somewhere in there, I spent a lot of time in bed, mostly with company. Somewhere in there, I cooked a meal and made oatmeal cookies. I'm liking this weekend-with-few-commitments thing. I'm going to try to do some more of it. Like next weekend, maybe.
