featherynscale: Nanny Ogg's Cookbook (cookbook)

Yesterday, I learned how to make blackened fish. I'm *this much* closer to being totally self-sufficient. *G* (Or at least, I can strike one more thing off the list of things I have to pay someone else to do for me.) It was damned tasty, too.

In other food news, I'm 2/5 on my 101 in 1001 goal of trying new restaurants in Kansas City.

[livejournal.com profile] triadruid and I visited Boudreaux's in Leawood the other week, largely on the strength of the name. As one might expect, Boudreaux's does Cajun food, and does it pretty well. I was pleased to note that one can get fried oysters there. (I've missed fried oysters since I've been in KC - for some reason, people don't seem to go in for them here.) We had jalapeños stuffed with crabmeat, which were tasty and contained what seemed like an unreasonable amount of crab, but there is no reason that I can see to complain about that. [livejournal.com profile] triadruid had blackened stuffed grouper (with crabmeat), and I had a fried seafood platter (which includes shrimp stuffed with crabmeat - it's sort of a theme). Both meals came with sautéed vegetables that did not seem to have a freezer in their past. Overall, quite good, but a little on the expensive side, particularly to be a place where the overall aesthetic seems to be about cramming in as many tables as possible to a fairly plain space with some Mardi Gras beads thrown around. So the atmosphere, not very impressive, but again, the food is quite good, which is really the important thing, right? We'd go back, and when we do, we're ordering "Bar Trash" - blackened shrimp and crabmeat in lemon butter. :)

We also tried HuHot Mongolian Grill, in Olathe on 119th Street. Pretty typical Mongolian BBQ sort of fare - get raw stuff, put it in a bowl, throw various sauce components on top and it's cooked in front of you on a big round grill. The food is decent (although I eschewed the various fish on the bar - it looked like it had been there far too long) and reasonably priced, but the best thing about the place is the menu, which informs you "how to pillage like a Mongol". Pillaging like a Mongol apparently involves queuing. Anyway, the menu is overall hysterical, and the atmosphere is nice, with very clever paintings on the wall. Sadly for those of us used to BD's Mongolian Barbecue, the folks on the grill at HuHot take their job very seriously, and do not seem to sing along with the music, fight each other with the grilling sticks, or throw things at each other, so the place is not as entertaining as it might be. On the other hand, there was nothing on my plate which hadn't been in my bowl first, which is never true of a plate served at BD's, so things even out. They also serve Chinese restaurant-like appetizers and soups. I got the hot and sour soup, which was nothing at all like any hot and sour soup I have ever eaten before (i.e. it might have been made with Campbell's vegetable soup stock), but was full of large chunks of shiitake mushroom and tofu, and was pretty good. Also of note: the BBQ bar here had green beans and spinach, which do not regularly appear at the other Mongolian BBQ places in town, and are a welcomed option. Also, apparently, this is a franchise chain.
