I'm the Martian in my office, in case there is any doubt. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing - in fact, recalling the ferret conversation, I think this is probably a good thing. Nonetheless, it leads me to have conversations like this one:

TW: (general comment)What can we gossip about now? ... (to me) How long have you been going out with your boyfriend?
Me: Since November.... maybe. I think.
TW: Me too! Wait. You don't know how long you've been seeing him?
Me: It's complicated. (goes back to work)
TW: So when are you getting married?
Me: Never. Well, not to him anyways. Or at least, that seems really, really, really unlikely.
TW: (puzzled) Why are you wasting your time with him, then, if you don't think you're going to get married?
Me: It's complicated. (goes back to work)
TW: Does he live by you?
Me: We live in the same house.
TW: I thought you had roommates.
Me: Three people live in our house.
TW: Well, if you live together, that's *like* being married, right?
Me: Sort of.
TW: Are you going to have kids?
Me: Gods, I hope not. That would be embarassing.
TW: You don't like kids??
Me: I like other people's kids.
TW: Oh.
Me: (goes back to work)

Reason #473 why I love you so.

Poor thing. Your officemate was not at all prepared for a conversation with somebody outside the cultural norm.

You could try talking about dogs instead.

I always assume that when you are mocking me, I will know, but in this case, I'm not finding that to be true. Maybe I'm tired.

No mockery at all. You were honest, yet merciful. Hats off to you. I promise to ::poke:: you when I'm mocking so you'll be sure, okay?

If you're super-tired, you could always come sleep in the Magic Bed (tm) tonight...

Thanks for the clarification :)
And also for the kind offer, but I fear that this would do little to promote my getting to work on time in the morning. Perhaps this weekend, sometime?

You are welcome in our bed anytime, but especially around 3am.

Well, I'm only at about 2 months here, so maybe I'll get there one day. Or I'll shoot myself in the head. 50/50, really.

When I was in my city cubicle I was proud to be the Office Martian, especially after looking around and seeing what passed for normal. While one spends an exhorbitant amount of time at work and around people who can't relate to your own beautiful individuality, it provides a nice contrast to those who can and provides a case study about how It Takes All Sorts. (I just like Our sort better ...)
