I'm the Martian in my office, in case there is any doubt. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing - in fact, recalling the ferret conversation, I think this is probably a good thing. Nonetheless, it leads me to have conversations like this one:
TW: (general comment)What can we gossip about now? ... (to me) How long have you been going out with your boyfriend?
Me: Since November.... maybe. I think.
TW: Me too! Wait. You don't know how long you've been seeing him?
Me: It's complicated. (goes back to work)
TW: So when are you getting married?
Me: Never. Well, not to him anyways. Or at least, that seems really, really, really unlikely.
TW: (puzzled) Why are you wasting your time with him, then, if you don't think you're going to get married?
Me: It's complicated. (goes back to work)
TW: Does he live by you?
Me: We live in the same house.
TW: I thought you had roommates.
Me: Three people live in our house.
TW: Well, if you live together, that's *like* being married, right?
Me: Sort of.
TW: Are you going to have kids?
Me: Gods, I hope not. That would be embarassing.
TW: You don't like kids??
Me: I like other people's kids.
TW: Oh.
