LJ-Balderdash, Parade of Beltane edition

Once again, it's Friday afternoon, and time for a round of LJ-Balderdash, the exciting game that we somehow haven't played since 2005. We play like this: I give you something to explain. I screen replies. You attempt to explain it. When I have ten replies, I post them in a new post, and ask people to choose the explanation that they either a) think is true or b) like the best. They then comment with their choice ("vote"). You may not vote for your own explanation. Each vote is worth one point.
This round's challenge: What is the origin of the phrase "balls to the wall"? For reference, if someone is doing something 'balls to the wall', it means that they are doing it as hard/intensely/completely as they can.
OK? Go.
RULES EDIT: If you think you know the answer For Real, make something else up. You'll have a chance to demonstrate your actual knowledge in the next phase. This part is all about the bullshitting. Also, your entry will bo posted without your name attached to it for the next bit, so try to remember which one was yours. :)
