What's your favourite childhood memory?

When I was little, I used to spend summers with my grandparents, which was nice, because I was an only child, and there were always a lot of kids there, either cousins or kids from the neighborhood. The cousin who was closest to me in age was my best friend, and we spent the summers getting into all kinds of trouble. Once, we convinced ourselves that we could fly, if we could just get big enough wings. So we had a number of these giant-sized coloring books, like 3 feet tall by a foot and a half wide, and we thought they'd be just about perfect. So one day, we strapped them to our arms with string and surgical tape, and spent the day jumping off of things - the swingset, the treehouse, the roof of the house - while flapping our arms wildly, trying to catch some air in those coloring books, trying to see if there was an angle at which we could hold our arms, or a flapping speed that would carry us any further. Of course, as soon as someone saw us, we had to come and sit inside quietly until they were able to determine that we hadn't injured ourselves in the exercise, but right up until that point, that day is my favorite childhood memory.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Not that this should be surprising to anyone.

what sort of flavour sensation makes you stop everything else and go "mmmmm".

Honey and cinnamon.
Blue cheese and black pepper.
Ginger and cream.
Habanero and citrus.
A smoky single-malt.

Being the sensory creature that I am, I could go on. :)

What place(s) in the world do you want to visit?

The short answer is everywhere. The long answer includes consideration of safety and comfort factors and ends up being more like "everywhere I'm not terribly likely to get shot, kidnapped, or beheaded in, and negative preference points to areas in which one can't drink the water".

I desire to be peripatetic, but in a self-indulgent way.

Actually, it was sort of an accident. I was 17, and had been reading/studying about pagan faiths for about a year. I was dating a guy (same guy who features in today's other personal history post) who was also interested in paganism of some sort. At this time, in our town, if you were pagan, you were either Wiccan, UU Pagan, or Asatru - there really weren't any other accessible options. So we went to the CUUPS, which was not what we were looking for, and we read about Asatru, and decided that wasn't us either, and then we saw an invitation for a Spring Equinox Wiccan circle that was open to everybody. So we got directions to the meeting place, and he and I got all dressed up and proceeded to go down there. When we got to the site, it was in a subdivision that was fenced off with privacy fence with all kinds of feminist symbols all over it, and we looked at each other, and went, "hmmm....", but the invitation we'd read said it was open to all, and everything we'd read about Wicca implied that it was a thing that required men and women to do, so we thought surely this would be okay.

As it turns out, this was a feminist group, who had bought a section of the city and walled it off, and never permitted men inside, and they were practicing Dianic Wicca, which we had never heard of. So our appearance at their main hall was something of a surprise for everyone.

They were very nice though, considering that we'd just broken their big juju taboo against bringing the penis people inside the gates, and they suggested another group to us, one that would take both the penis people and women.

So we hooked up with them. As it turned out, this was the Alexandrian

Open to everyone, IF...

Wouldn't you take some security measures with your, err, compound if you were that concerned about penis people invading your sacred space? Or at least your PR people...

I'm not talking about leather dykes with machine guns in guard towers, but the image of a "Skirts Mandatory" sign and mirrored floors was *too* funny to pass up...

A random sampling of my current playlist (hit randomize and take the first ten songs) is:
1. Ozric Tentacles - Og Ha Be (psychedelic jam band)
2. Echo and the Bunnymen - Silver (80s goth-pop)
3. Calexico - The Book and the Canal (southwestern - no better classification forthcoming)
4. Nine Inch Nails - I Do Not Want This (90s angst-pop)
5. Pro-Tech - Thread Four (techno)
6. A-Ha - Take on Me (80s europop)
7. Johnny Depp - Minor Swing (pseudo-django from Chocolat soundrack)
8. Drivin N Cryin - The Innocent (90s rock)
9. Afro-Celt Sound System - Seed (World fusion)
10. Queen - Bicycle Race (Gay chorale rock)

So um... yeah. Like that.

Thanks!

Spicy dishes?

How are you with spicy food? Preference for mexican, thai, chinese, cajun?

I require spicy food in order to live. My favorite for spicy is actually more caribbean and thai, which tend towards spice balanced with sweet or tangy, but I also dig the other things.

For a long time when I was a kid, I couldn't really taste anything, so I cultivated a taste for the spiciest things I could find, because that was the only thing I could smell or taste. Now I can smell and taste most things, but I still like the peppers.

Do you speak Welsh? If so, when did you learn, and from whom?

From: [identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com
Oh, hells no. I know a basic Welsh pronunciation set, and a handful of words, most of which I picked up from mythology. I'd like to though. It's on my list of things to learn, along with Spanish and Yoruba.

Do you have any siblings? And regardless of the answer what was your favorite thing about having them or being an only child?

Date: 2004-06-22 11:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com
I don't have any full siblings. I do have two half-sisters, who are my father's children by his second wife, and two sort of step-half-brothers that are my father's third wife's kids by her first husband. (whew!)

I never lived with any of the abovementioned siblings, though, so I grew up like an only child. The best thing about that was that I had a lot of time to read. (The bad thing about that was that I grew up to be painfully introverted and shy.)
