Last night, I was in a sleep loop. When I went to bed,
zylch and
kittenpants were in the living room talking. I sat in bed reading for a while, and then I heard
zylch leave. All was quiet for a time, and I went to sleep. Then, some thirty minutes later, I woke up and heard
zylch again. This really didn't seem all that odd. "Perhaps she's left and come back," I thought, "perhaps she'd just gone to the car the first time."
So I went back to sleep. When I next woke up, it was roughly 3:00 a.m. I looked at the clock, muttered an obscenity, rolled over and went back to sleep. I woke up some time later to find that it was 1:14. At this point, I discerned that something was perhaps not quite right.
The process repeated itself two more times, each time allowing me to wake up earlier than I had the last time. All in all, I went to sleep at midnight, got up at 6:00 a.m. and feel as if I've slept for 9 or 10 hours. Maybe I got all the sleep that
triadruid missed last night, I don't know. The whole thing was just a little weird, even for me.
Abortion: Should be legal, but less common than it is now. I have this crazy idea that sex education that actually discusses contraceptives and birth control might be a first step here. I mean, last I checked, the US had the highest teen pregnancy rate among developed nations. Anybody want to guess why that might be?
Death Penalty: As the system stands, against. The Illinois investigation made it pretty clear to me that perhaps the justice system isn't as close to just as people think.
Prostitution: Should be legal and regulated. I tend to think that what you want to do with your body ought to be your business, and that if you feel that sex for money is the best use of your skills, you ought to be able to do that. However, I'm only interested in allowing people who want to be prostitutes to be prostitutes - coercing someone else into prostitution should remain illegal.
Alcohol: You can't really get rid of it, can you? It's a drug just like any other drug, and I'm generally in favor of the availability of psychoactive chemicals. I'm also all about informed choice, though, so I think that continuing to educate people that alcohol is a potentially addictive and dangerous drug is probably a good idea.
Marijuana: Not much different from alcohol in my book, except that it's less likely to induce violence. So really, I'd rather hang out with the stoners than the drunks, as I'm less likely to get punched in the eye. I really don't see why this should be illegal, except that we've built up so much cultural taboo against it. (There's something about a substance not being supported by centuries old, entrenched industry that makes us a little nervous about it, especially if it's favored by minorities and subcultures - funny, that.)
Other Drugs: Generally in favor of regulated legalization. Again with the informed choice though - honest drug education in schools would be a step in the right direction. Keeping any particular substance illegal doesn't seem to curb use any, it just grows a culture of money and violence around the substance, and makes it more difficult for people struggling with the substance to get help.
Gay Marriage: Why not? I fail to see why the state has any interest in this issue at all, except for the fact that we like a little too much church with our state over here in the USA.
Illegal Immigrants: Like with abortion above, in a perfect world there wouldn't have to be all that many of these. Make the system easier to navigate, and let people come in legally. Or, alternately, work in cooperation with the places these folks are coming in from to make staying there a more liveable proposition. Cooperative games rule.
Smoking: Tobacco is fairly nasty stuff. I like a clove every now and again (or liked, rather - I don't indulge anymore), but the sort of thing most people seem to want to smoke smells like ass. However, like with other drugs, I think that it's your business what sort of toxins you choose to imbibe. I prefer if you don't share your smoke with me, but I don't castigate those who smoke near me either.
Drunk Driving: Is stupid.
Cloning: In favor of cloning tissues and organs, unsure about whole organisms. Nifty and useful, but potentially very scary. Still thinking about it.
Racism: Is stupid.
Premarital Sex: In favor of. A) I think that knowing that you're compatible sexually with the person you want to spend the rest of your life with is a much better idea than going into the marriage blind; B) I've seen too many good christian friends rush into bad marriages with people they had no outside-the-bedroom interest in just so they could have sex within the tenets of their faith; and C) if I weren't in favor of, I'd never get laid.
Religion: Religion for those who want it, no religion for those who don't want it. Any religion is fine by me, as long as it feeds your soul and doesn't take a toll on your mental health.
The War in Iraq: Meaningless and shameless.
Bush: Anybody but, in 2004.
Downloading Music: Absolutely for. Otherwise, how would you know what you liked? The radio is no longer a viable forum for gaining access to new music, unless you're interested in ten new songs per month, made by ten bands that have "the sound" for the year, and therefore sound exactly the same. I still buy music, even though I download (although I don't buy from big labels - partially this is a boycott due to their actions where downloading is concerned, and partially because they don't have anything I'm interested in anymore).
The Legal Drinking Age: Should be 18. We consider you an adult in nearly all other ways at 18, why not here too?
Porn: Why not? Again, what you choose to do for money with your body is your business, and I don't think there's anything wrong with looking at people in a sexual way - we are sexual creatures, and no amount of denying the fact is going to change that.
Suicide: Doesn't get you much of anywhere, does it?

Re: Libertarians
Date: 2004-04-28 11:40 am (UTC)I hate being told "no".
My first impulse when I see a Keep off the grass sign is to toss a beach towel on the turf, stretch out, and light up some weed, violating the sign in as many ways as possible.
Haven't actually done that yet ... likely never will, asthma and smoking anything is kind of a bad combination.
Exception to the above: It may rankle a bit, but I've found that it is better for my longevity and insurance rates if I follow the paint markings on the road during rush hour.

Re: Libertarians
Date: 2004-04-28 07:08 pm (UTC)I find the stoners preferred over drunks due to the lessened chances of getting poked in the eye ... do you speak from personal experience? Can't imagine even a drunk wanting to take a swing at you. Well, come to think of it, my freshman roommate would swing at anybody when soused, fortunately, his aim was terrible when in that condition.
