I'm pretty sure it's lateral movement. Given the forced-choice between ninja and pirate, though, I'm bound to choose pirate. It sort of runs in my family. Besides, pirates get better shoes. I'll take knee-high cuffed boots over the weird ninja toe-split shoes any day. Also, when you're a pirate, you get to announce how cool you are as you're being cool - if you're a ninja, you just have to be cool in secret, and nobody ever gets to know.
