As far as the Wintertime holidays go, this was probably the least alarming of any in my memory. Most of that is probably because my interaction with the relations was confined to telephone calls, and then only to Mom and Grandma. Mom and Grandma were on relatively good behavior (which means that Grandma was not in the background yelling "Your mom wants grandchildren", like she was the last time I talked to Mom...) so that was easy. They are a little odd, though, the relations.
Example: I'm talking to Grandma, she commiserates with me on the upcoming loss of my job. I tell her about a job that I have heard about that I intend to apply for, which is a job in the public sector, and has potential to like, help people, and stuff, and also would be the sort of job that I sometimes went to school for, and would pay more than my current gig. And she goes, "I don't know. That doesn't sound like a very happy job. Not a very good job for a young lady. **heavy sigh** You just pray about that." But I suppose that if that's the worst of it, it's not too bad.
Also, Grandma sent me a check for Christmas that's being converted into new computer parts. She asked me on the phone what I was going to spend it on, and I tried to explain about the death of the computer. Talking computers with any of my relatives other than Mom or my Crazy Uncle is always a sort of exciting proposition, but I am brave and bold and willing to try. I had a hard time getting her to understand that I was not buying a whole new computer, only some new parts, but other than that, she seemed not to be too lost. She didn't ask any questions that had to be answered with numbers, so that made the conversation a lot easier. Somewhere on the net there's a page about a man who has a conversation with his mother about megabytes, and how that's just a measurement, and more than one thing could be measured in megabytes, just like you could have a pint of milk or a pint of blood, and then the mother goes off on "Why do you always have to talk about blood?".... That sort of thing is what usually happens when we try to talk about technology.
I did get to spend a fair amount of time with
kittenpants' family though, and that was generally good. We played a rousing round of "Is
kittenpants' brother gay or not?", which is always entertaining. Somehow, no matter how much information we get, we never seem to be any closer to the answer to that question than we were before. I told her yesterday she could just ask him, but she said that wouldn't be any fun.
Also,
greektoomey gave us the clap, mono, and syphillis. Wasn't that nice of him? :)
