Why Eris? She can be a difficult Goddess to have around.
The easy and cheap (but still true) answer to that is "You don't pick who you fall in love with, do you?". The somewhat more detailed answer goes like this: There are two things in life that I can be certain of - everything can change, and everything will end. Everything else, every act, everything I do should proceed from those two points of certainty. That everything can change implies that there is hope that it will improve. That everything ends implies that the time to improve it is now. Mutability and entropy - those are my bedrock, and they're the things She stands for. Also, She's a hell of a lot of fun, and being one of Her pack means that no matter how bad things are, I have another way to view them, and that gets me through. (I've probably mentioned on LJ before that I frequently get through the news by thinking that all of the mentioned politicians might just be Discordians more hardcore than me pulling the ultimate mindfuck...)
What's been your "best" act of culture jamming?
The Hedonism Flaunt has been my favorite so far - my forays into the world of culture-jamming tend to be on the more surreal side anyway, and this one was more fun than probably permitted by law. 15-20 people in full fairy/RenFaire/miscellaneos glam array trotting through the big ritzy snotty shopping area of town, singing bawdy songs and telling people to go home and get laid, handing out chocolate and flowers - it was fantastic. I think that most of the crappy aspects of our culture, the rampant consumerism, the sexual repression, the holier-than-thou wars, all of that stuff, I think that it all happens because people don't know any other way to be - I think that if we can show people another way that's less stressful, they'll take it. The point of the Flaunt, and all the surrealist actions, is that it's okay to do things that are not what everybody else is doing - it's okay to make different choices. I don't know if it helps anybody or not, but I hope it does.
Why is quetzalcoatl important to you?
Another thing that I'm big on is the idea of the third path - if I am presented with two options, what I generally want to do is form a third, integrative option, a kind of inclusive and dynamic balance between the two given poles. Quetzalcoatl represents a species of that to me - the union between air and ground, bird and snake, angel and demon (this is also where my screen name comes from). The formation of the third path brings change in the additive sense - where integration of opposites into a dynamic third occurs, new levels of possibility open, which I think is represented in the Quetzalcoatl mythology also.
Are there any full pictures of your hair? If so, will you share them?
No, I wish there were. The one I posted is the only one I have, though. I'd take a pic now, but the color has faded... it's a sort of mossy copper-brown now, as the color underneath the green was a bright copper red.
What matters?
My friend Dan says (and I'm sure this is a quote from a comic or a tv show) "If nothing you do matters, the only thing that matters is what you do", and I'm inclined to agree. If entropy and mutability are the core truths of the universe (and they are in mine), then in the end, everything falls apart, and nothing matters at all - we're all in the same place, smashed to leptons, or whatever. Given that that's where we're all going, the best thing that I can do is make the most of what I have right now, to make my life the life I want to live. What matters is whether or not I can lie on my deathbed and say, "Wow. What a wonderful life this was, I had a great time, I enriched other people's lives, I made positive change, I want to do it again."
