So I've been trying to do more things I've never done before (partially because I think this will make me a better human being, but mostly because it's an excuse to play around with things). I think that the logical next step to trying new things is to assess them, see if they're worth doing again. So here are my ratings of new stuff from the past few weeks:

Getting Laid Off
I've been fired before, I've quit, I've moved away without notice, but I've never been laid off. So now that my company is imploding, I have been. This means weeks of unexpected vacation, which has been different, but not all that exciting. Getting paid not to come in, though, there's something undeniably good about that.
Grade: B
Recommended for:
The supremely stressed-out
Slackers

Green Hair
Something I always wanted to do - I couldn't do it in high school (which is the proper time for such things) because it wasn't worth the inevitable ugliness with my mother, and haven't been able to do it since then, as I've always been, well, employed. So now seemed like the perfect time. I love it. The process was a bit messy, and left me with a green neck for two days, causing an unforeseen desire to wear turtlenecks, but the color is very sexxay.
Grade: A
Recommended for:
Anime girls
The unemployed
Porn stars, aspiring and otherwise

Acrylic Nails
Eh. Beautiful, but ultimately non-functional. Good for some things, including a compelling tapping sound, petting the cat, and scratching other people's backs, but not so good for many other things, including typing, getting un/dressed, opening soda cans, home improvement, and many, many more. The process is, however, supremely interesting, as it involves bizarre alchemical preparations, and having the business end of power tools closer to your fingers than many would deem wise.
Grade: C-
Recommended for:
Ornamental women
Nail-biters
Compulsive masturbators trying to break the habit

Des Moines
It's cold. Even colder than Kansas City, as if that were humanly possible. There are a disturbing number of references to pigs and farming on public buildings. Not far from Des Moines there is what appears to be a tractor sales business that is labelled "Farm Imp". I've never seen a farm imp before, but my D&D campaign will be richer because of it. Also of note, they serve eggplant at the Macaroni Grill in Des Moines, whereas the one in Kansas City does not. Still, cold, and pig-ful.
Grade: B-
Recommended for:
Norwegians
Pig farmers

Meeting [livejournal.com profile] triadruid's Family
They're terribly cool. They all seem to be fairly liberal intellectuals who enjoy bad puns and playing games. We talked about art history in the living room. This never happens in my family. I offered to trade him, but was denied. Also, nobody seemed put off by the green hair, and nobody asked why he bothered to drag his roommate to a family gathering.
Grade: A+
Recommended for:
Green-haired extraneous roommates
Pun fiends

More to come, most likely.

>>Compulsive masturbators trying to break the habit

As with using cash registers here, the trick is to arch your fingers back.

Man, I have seen about as much porno action as Ralph Nader, but even I knew that one. ::grin::

>>It's cold. Even colder than Kansas City,

While in Denver, there was a road-trip to DesMoines. The local Amtgard group was called Querna Tema. It was decided that this meant "cold as f-ck" in the old tongue. Fighting was done in a field of various turds (farm land) but no worries as dog poo freezes solid in 75 minutes, and is freeze-dried in a day.

Wait until you visit Wisconsin though... remember, you're still barely halfway up North America. ;-)

I get gel nails, and have done so for a couple of years. My real nails never grow in very strongly, and this after trying everything from extra calcium in my diet to silica supplements. I told my husband when I got home from the first time I had them done, "They worked on my nails with a powder-blue Dremel."

You are a stronger woman than I, then... I'm trying to keep these on for a full two weeks so that I can say I've given the thing a fair appraisal period, and I'm not sure I'm going to make that.

The dremelling process was terribly interesting though.

did the lay off thing with pay. i agree, i liked it.
did the green hair. it doesn't look as good on me, probably cuz it clashed with my green skin. pink looks better on me.
did the nails thing and i agree it's a real bugger. looks pretty but not really good for those of us who actually work.
did the des moines thing and you are right, it's fuquking
cold.
i always loved my in-laws much more than my own family so i agree with you there too. i married mac to make them my family but still no trade. we just both hate the same side of the family which works for us.
