Movie night

Saw The Matrix: Revolutions last night with hotokegi. Spent the first three minutes of the film whispering fervent, repetitive prayers to the movie gods (who, for the record, I think are probably Dionysus, Scheherazade, and Leo the MGM Lion) asking them to please let this one be better than the last one. And, lo, it was. Aside from an excessive amount of celebrations on Coruscant at the end of the film, and an incongruous Oscar-moment, not bad at all. Changes in apparent speed of motion were fairly appropriately used throughout (unlike in Reloaded, where apparently any sudden movement was an acceptable use of bullet-time...). Much visual impressiveness, overall. Less philosophy, and more explosions, which I appreciated, as I thought that the last film got pretty far out of the writers' depth on the philosophy end.

Anyway, no spoilers here - just a note that it was worth my $8.

In other news, the trailers for The Last Samurai and Troy impressed me - I'll likely end up going to see them both.

::blinks:: The Last Samurai? Isn't that the Tom-Cruise-as-a-Samurai flick??? Far and Away goes to Japan?

I haven't seen the Troy trailer, but I thought the Last Samurai looked fairly awful...then again, I haven't liked much of anything Tom Cruise has done since, oh... Mission: Preposterous? Then again, I did like Courage Under Fire and Glory, which were done by the same director, so we'll see.

I'm looking forward to Revolutions, based on your review, and seeing Alien on the big screen if I can convince SOMEONE to go with me - didn't we ask Robin to??

I'll go to Alien. I can't guarantee I won't scream like a little girl and jump in your lap, but I'll go.
(This, of course, assumes that you wouldn't have already screamed like a little girl and jumped in *my* lap.)

Apparently, The Last Samurai is a sort of situation in which some person of power in Japan has recruited war heroes from other parts of the world to train his armies in this new "cavalry with guns" thing that's just come out, and is not, in fact, meaning to establish Mr. Cruise as some sort of very rugged and incongruously western Japanese person. But yeah, it looked not terrible at all, despite Tom Cruise, who I am not wild about either.

I am, however, a sucker for large-scale battle scenes lately, so that may be part of it. (That rationale for wanting to see it also applies to Troy, possibly.)

The trailer for Troy did kick complete ass.

I have incredibly mixed feelings about The Last Samurai, even though this last trailer makes it look very interesting.

ah...ok so it's actually about troy the place. see with movies these days you just never know. remember that movie truman that wasn't about harry truman but a guy born into a t.v. life named truman? that's my point.

It really freakin' rules. Of course, it's the embodiment of everything I love about Japan (barring anime) and what I write for on a certain role-playing game, so I'm nuts for it. But it really was an impressive trailer.

Given that I'm a sucker for Samuari films, historical pieces, and redemption stories, I'm definitely there. It's just a bonus that it involves the Meiji period of Japan (which is also the setting of Rurouni Kenshin).

On the negative side, this is the same guy who wrote the last Star Trek movie, which I loathe less than Hitler, but more often.

I'm the same kind of sucker. I normally don't pursue Tom Cruise movies (I made an exception for Minority Report), but damn, Japan looks so pretty. And the combat sequences look good. And... and... and... at least it's not Mel Gibson? *reaches for straw and grabs it hard*

Damned good looking sword work in trailor. Just glad to see a movie with sword work in it that actually has SOMETHING to do with the possible uses of a real sword. After all this Matrix/Kill Bill crap I think this gets a pass from me on that alone. I will definently go and see it.
