We're actually pretty lucky here in Columbus to have both CD101 (alt-rock) and WCBE (world and multi-genre music plus NPR-type news/talk). People here criticize it, but few cities these days have it better.
(A friend used to work for ClearChannel identifying songs played on various alt-rock & 80s radio stations from around the country. Most stations were easy for him, but he hated having to do CD101 because of the sheer variety and obscurity of a lot of their playlist. Of course he loved getting to listen to them normally.)
Of course, being able to play podcasts and personal MP3s, as well as living near the edge of the broadcast range, has made a big difference in how much (little) I listen to the radio.
