Content-free Friday presents: Doggies!

Fractal the Chaos Hound is bound for the V.E.T. this morning. He got in a fight with something that tore the bejeezus out of his ear, and he won't let it heal. It's The Cone for him, I'm afraid.

Also, he snapped his dropline off at the hook the other day, so we had to get him a new one. The new one is rated for dogs over 150 pounds. Fractal probably only weighs about 60 pounds, but he's got another 90 pounds of ideas, so the Giant Doggie line seemed appropriate. Of course, within a day of being on the new line, he's figured out how to detach it at the end which is not attached to him, so maybe he's actually got 100 pounds of ideas, and they don't make a dropline rated for that.

He doesn't go anywhere when he gets off the line anymore. He just sits there in the yard, as if to say "I am a free man, and with my freedom, I choose to stay here." That's probably not good enough for animal control, though. They fail to recognize my dog's innate nobility. Fence plans proceed apace.

You guys aren't going to the volunteer shift at Wayside Waifs tomorrow, are you? My family is forbidden to come home with any extra heartbeats. (I'm hoping this will cover non-traditional pet acquisitions.)

what about the invisafence so he's colared and can't leave the yard? or you could do a neat farm style one i'll help dig holes when needed

I think he'd be unimpressed by the invisafence. It wouldn't take him long to discover that once you get a certain distance to the other side of the line, the annoying thing stops, just like it does if you go back to the middle of the yard.

I think we're just going to contract somebody to do it -- we tried to do it ourselves, but there's just so much yard.

Between Jim and Iz we are a one dog family, but this one really appealed to me. I don't know if it's the shiny black coat or the expression in her face. Still, I'm happy with my Izzy, who is curled up on the couch wondering why in the word mommy is looking at pictures of other dogs when I could be petting her.

I just wanted to let you know that if you ever wrote a novel or something, I'd be your biggest fan. I love your writing style.

In other news, the invisafences don't cage dogs that ... have 100 lbs of ideas. Those ones are either willing to take a shock for that rabbit, or well, just don't feel the shock. I'm sure you know that, though.

Fences are a pain in the rear, but good luck. Do it slowly so you don't kill yourself hauling cement around the yard and digging holes.

Unless I've misunderstood, isn't the fence primarily for Animal Control's benefit? Wouldn't they be satisfied with invisafence, and Fractal be satisfied ditching his leash and sitting freely in his own yard?

Also, yeah, I was evaluating the possibility that the invisible fence would keep him in, and thinking, "Nope. That there is a dog that's willing to take the shock and just keep going.". And I'm vaguely proud of him for that, because, really, that's what I'd do. :)

Primarily, yeah. Just like the doghouse that he refuses to set foot in is for Animal Control's benefit.

But I'm really not into the idea that I might cause my dog to get shocked, you know? I hate being shocked, and I don't want to inflict it on anybody else either. (Unless they like that sort of thing, which is okay, it just has to be negotiated beforehand.)

I know what you mean. I was worried enough about the bark collar to actually put it on myself and give it a try -- even after a friend assured me that they'd done the same thing. A big surprise, sure, but not really painful.

I just wanted you to know I'm reading this at work and I laughed so hard in the back office I had everybody working in the front office coming back here wondering what was so "gosh darn funny."

Good luck with Fractal! If I were to describe him as other than you have, based on my small amount of interaction with him, I would say that he's very much a dog that has his own ideas, is very smart and creative, and the attitude of to hell with what anyone thinks he *should* be doing, he's going to do things his own way, thank you very much. He's a pirate dog if there ever was one, man.

there is a diff. version of invisafence, where once they are out of range of the hub thing, it shocks them till the collars battery dies... my only concern was that it also shocks them if the power goes out, cuz then the signal stops, but the collar is self powered and im rambling now...
