Presented for your edification, today's Google How-To was "How To Appreciate Death Metal". I love these. The last few have covered a range of topics from "How to Make Bottle Cap Earrings" to "How to Stop a Car With No Brakes" to "How to Calculate Center of Gravity". I've been taking them as an omen about skills I might need in the day ahead (which did make the one about how to stop a car with no brakes a little alarming, but hey).

Also, Earth Calendar, a compilation of holidays sorted by date, country, religion, and so on. Brilliantly helpful. In 2007, I know when Easter will be. This marks the first year every in my life that I have known ahead of time when Easter was. Ever.

I read the "How to stop a car with no brakes" How-to with interest, as this happened to me 10 years ago. I was driving at 60 mph on the highway. I pumped the brakes but I had a leak in the master cylinder so that didn't work. I was going too fast to downshift. Number 5 is where I went wrong:

"Use the emergency brake. The emergency brake, or "parking brake," can usually stop a vehicle, although it will take longer than usual to come to a stop. Apply the brake (depending on your vehicle this is done either by pulling up on the handle or pushing down on the pedal) slowly and steadily. If you pull up the brake quickly, you may lose control of your vehicle.

I spun 180 degrees, and the semi behind me slammed into me. I was mainly unhurt as the major impact site was on the passenger side. I was lucky I was wearing my seatbelt.

Heh. I've never had it on any calendar I was keeping before. (Wall calendars don't count for me as I've never been able to keep them properly, and desk calendars only have the sort of holidays you get off of work on.)

Seriously, it is a very thorough collection, though, so in addition, I can now know when Diwali, Secretaries' Day, and Harry Houdini's birthday are. You know, in case I need to.

I'm glad you appreciate WikiHow. I hang out there more often than Wikipedia lately. It's got a more laid-back, "Hey isn't this neat?" atmosphere.

When I was in college, my friend Margaret and I developed an Any Excuse to Party Calendar. You know, just in case. We had an event for every day of the year. Highlights included National Gumbo Day, the birthday of the Marquis de Sade, Texas Indedepence Day, and for some reason, we included Andy Gibb's birthday. Because really, any excuse will do.
