Wedding Cake

One of the folks at the office has a daughter who got married over the weekend, and she was kind enough to bring in some of the leftover cake. As a person with a deep and powerful appreciation of cake in all its varied forms (except Twinkies), I was delighted. And lo, the cake was tasty, but was not what I was expecting.

When I hear 'wedding cake', I have a particular picture in my head, a Platonic ideal of wedding cake. It is white, and dense, cool on the tongue and flavored with vanilla and almond. The icing is stiffer than your standard garden variety icing, and possibly also almond flavored, but not strongly. That is wedding cake. This was regular everyday cake that had been done up in a fancy shape.

And now, I have a craving for wedding-cake cake. Could some of you get married soon* so I could have some? :p

* - No, in fact, my vast bitterness about people getting married does not extend to hate for the cake. One cannot be bitter about cake. Unless they run out of cake before you get there. Then you can.

Oh that sounds lovely. That's standard for wedding cake in the States? In Britain wedding cake = dense rich fruitcake, with a layer of marzipan and then very hard icing on top. Sweet, filling and something I can't stand..!

That's the cake I have grown accustomed to. It is overly sweet, and you can generally only eat about an inch-thick slice of it, but I'm still awfully fond of it. I have yet to encounter a fruitcake done as a wedding cake, and am taking a moment to be pleased about that. :)

Perhaps we should skip the dumb shit, and just have a wedding cake party? MOre fun, less stress, and we can still have a DJ and dance and drink.

There is a clever way to do this. One need only call a few bakeries, claiming to be getting married and wanting to taste cakes. We could mix it up, like, and have oddly matched people go for tastings and then report. :)

That doesn't disrespect the sanctity of marriage. It only disrespects the sanctity of capitalism.

It might well get you on a lot of people's mailing lists. And I can tell you that these wedding industry people do not let go of you once you are on the list. I know, because I still get email from websites I registered with the last time I was engaged, which was a pretty damned long time ago.

We had a yummy cake. It had vanilla custard between the layers, and the icing was good--not sickly sweet or too thick. Most wedding cakes, I scrape off the damn icing.
