[livejournal.com profile] matchgirl42 had the brilliant idea to do one day at DragonCon this year as Discworld characters. We figure we can get her as Granny Weatherwax, me as Nanny Ogg, and [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants as Magrat, which gives us a solid three witches. I think I've even got most of the costume bits for Nanny Ogg already, although I will need some bloomers, preferably in a purple pornographic print (say that 3x fast!). [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants can go all new agey and crystal-covered -- I think we can put together hers without any difficulty too.

[livejournal.com profile] wildnsquirrelly, if he should go, has been drafted to go as Greebo, in leather pants and a rakish eyepatch. Everybody likes that, and it gives him the opportunity to flirt or menace, as he prefers.

Of our group, this only leaves [livejournal.com profile] triadruid. What character should he dress as, do you think?

EDIT:
A wizard's staff has a knob on the end
It never will buckle, it never will bend
He cherishes it, and he calls it his friend,
and he frequently takes it in hand.

A wizard's staff is the source of his power.
He checks up on it every hour on the hour
And he's never surprised when it turns to a flower --
The fairest throughout all the land.

The staff of a wizard with honour is crowned.
Without it a wizard will rarely be found.
'Tis big and its round and weighs three to the pound
And without it he's truly unmanned.

The staff of a wizard can do mighty deeds.
It protects him from harm and attends to his needs,
Provides him with banquets upon which he feeds
And potions on which he gets canned.

Whenever a wizard is lonely or sad,
Or feeling dejected, or puzzled, or mad,
He turns to his staff, and things don't seem so bad --
By it he is never trepanned.

The staff of a wizard is dear to his heart
The source and the succour of his magic art.
They travel together, are never apart,
A relationship few understand.

The staff of a wizard is polished with care.
He anoints it with spices and unguents rare,
Bedecks it with silver and jewels most fair,
And on feast days he has it japanned.

* A wizard when young has a staff that is small.
It's puny and weak, ineffective withal.
It grows with his power until it stands tall
As his fame and his glory expand.

A wizard's staff can do manifold tricks
To puzzle the nobles and fuddle the hicks
It rescues the wizard from many a fix --
It is totally at his command.

When a wizard is old, and is starting to fade
He looks on his staff that with cunning he made
The crown of his life and the tool of his trade
And together they make their last stand.

Rincewind? The librarian? Or... Luggage. *grin*

Jason Ogg? Death? Brutha? Vimes? I don't know.

Librarian, maybe.

Must read more Discworld, meet more characters.

I like Death... but that's just me.

If I were going to Dragon Con, I'd step up for Ridcully. I want to make a hat like his.

That's fun. I wonder if we could get a larger Unseen University group together. One wizard is probably okay, if it's Rincewind, but a whole chunk of wizards is much funnier.

And I could teach them to sing "A Wizard's Staff has a Knob on the End". That'd be fun.

Last time I watched a Harry Potter movie, I couldn't get that song out of my head. If we did manage a UU group, the Dean should be in the leather robe with "Born to Rune" studs on the back.

Wooooo!

I think these are all ab fab - and I totally support the idea of [livejournal.com profile] wildnsquirrelly as Greebo. Mwowr!

I will do my best to be a fierce Granny Weatherwax. :D

And for [livejournal.com profile] triadruid, the first character that came to mind was Baron Saturday, but I also like the idea of a wizard from UU. Maybe the Archchancelor? Or Ponder Stibbons?

Ohh!

I don't know if it might help in the search for purple pornographic bloomers, but there is this site, Bloomers4u.com (http://www.bloomers4u.com/theatreRef.html). Hee!

Hehe. Found this (http://reprodepotfabrics.com/bwtchp.html), thought it could be an interesting fabric for Nanny Ogg bloomers. Hee!!

I think he's thinking of Vimes at this point. The cop thing, it appeals to him. I tried to talk him into DEATH or Rincewind, but we'll see. :)

We're checking in on the 1st and out on the 4th. Flights haven't been made yet, so I can't say when exactly quite yet.

Ah...those are the days I figured on, but I wanted to make sure. I'm probably going to do the same thing. (Getting there thursday night and settling in, leaving all of friday open for getting registered and such, is tempting, but I think if I/we leave earlier than I/we did last year, the registration process will be easier/doable, and really, the extra $150 doesn't seem worth it) Thanks!

And ya'll are flying in? If ya'll want, and we can get flight/driving schedules to coincide, I'd be happy to pick you guys up at the airport. :)
From: [identity profile] matchgirl42.livejournal.com
Hehe. And here I thought Nanny Ogg was a tad anachronistic. I could be mistaken, though.

I'm not sure what the plan for flying in will be. We might want to try to get there around 11:00 a.m., so that we can get registered in time to go to the opening stuff, or we might shoot for closer to 3:00 p.m., so that we can come in, take stuff immediately to the hotel, and check in and such.

Is it rational to think that you are going to be able to drive up and get there in the late morning/early afternoon? If we take option A above, and try to meet you at the airport, that would have you leaving in the 5 a.m. range. That doesn't seem terribly feasible to me, not to mention cruel and unusual.

I imagine we could figure something like that out, though. I'd much rather meet you at the airport and come in than have to cart all of our earthly possessions aboard the MARTA...

She's anarchistic, but I'm not sure that's the same thing.

re: timing

Whoa. Um. 5am? Surely you're joking. You do remember this is me you're talking to, right?

Um. Yeah. Early morning, probably not. Thus the qualifier, "[if] we can get flight/driving schedules to coincide."

But 3pm I know I can do. Last year, we ended up not getting on the road until 10am, because, well, we farted around. But if we're on the road by 8am, if not a bit earlier, we should get to the airport sometime between 2 and 3. And honestly? These days I can't sleep past a certain point, usually 8am or so, even on the weekends, without meds.(this hydrocodone stuff makes me reaaaaally sleepy in addition to loopy) Does this mean I'm transforming from a night owl to one of the day people. I hope not. ;)

Also, re:parking, I was thinking of leaving my car at the Lenox MARTA station (http://www.itsmarta.com/getthere/stations/lenox.htm), since it's only $3/$4 per day, compared to the $20/day at the Marriott. But I was going to check into the hotel first, definately. I agree with you, carting all your earthly possessions on the MARTA would SUCK.

Well, think about it, and let me know. It's a long ways off, we've got time. :)
